When To Report a Car Accident, When Not To and The Consequences
When do you report an accident, when don’t you, and what are the consequences? Below are some valuable guidelines to help you know what to do if you get in a collision.
- Recently been involved in a collision? Compare car insurance rates to see if you can pay less for your coverage.
Reporting an Accident: No injuries and damages are within your province’s threshold
Police Reporting: Each province sets a dollar value for estimated damages that will determine if you need to involve the police. In Alberta and Ontario, for example, the threshold is $Two,000. What’s this mean? You are not required to report an accident to the police if the total harm is less than that outlined by the province. This limit includes the harm to both vehicles.
- The limit in Ontario and Alberta used to be $1,000; however, in two thousand eleven Alberta upped the limit to $Two,000 while Ontario upped the limit in the fall of 2015.
Insurance Company Reporting: Your insurance policy states that you are required to report all accidents, regardless of the amount of harm. Many drivers believe that if they pay the damages themselves they don’t need to involve the insurer; this is not true. Your insurer needs to be kept in the loop of any collision.
Peak: When in an accident that is not your fault, having a dash cam recorder for movie coverage may increase the chances that your insurance company will side with you in case of a claim.
Reporting an Accident: No injuries and damages exceed your province’s threshold
Police Reporting: By law, you are required to report an accident if the harm exceeds your province’s limit (Alberta and Ontario’s is $Two,000). In other words, if you’re an Ontario resident and one vehicle sustains $1000 in estimated damages and the other vehicle is dinged for $1001 in damages, you are required to report it to the police or a Collision Reporting Centre.
Failing to report an accident to the police when it’s required by law means you are running the risk of being charged with leaving the scene. Leaving the scene of a collision is a serious conviction that could result in a hefty increase to your car insurance rates, fines, and even jail time.
Insurance Company Reporting: You are required to report all collisions to your auto insurance company. If you don’t report it, and the other driver does, their insurance company could contact yours in the process of lodging the claim. If it is determined that you were partially or wholly at-fault for the collision—even if you paid for the damages yourself—your rates may end up reflecting that you were involved in an accident.
What about collisions that occur on private property, like parking lots?
For the most part, a parking lot accident is no different than a collision that occurs while driving on the street, road or highway. The police will need to be notified if there are injuries, or if there are damages that exceed your province’s threshold. And, even tho’ it may be private property, you need to notify your insurer if you’re involved in a collision.
Scripts when reporting an accident is required, no matter what the value of property harm
There are times when you must, by law, report a collision to the police no matter how much—or little—property harm has been sustained, like when the collision involves:
- Injury (no matter how minor) or death
- A criminal act like impaired driving
- A government vehicle (Federal, Provincial or Municipal)
- A vehicle that is transporting dangerous goods
- Uninsured or unlicensed drivers
- Harm to private, municipal or highway property (think a homeowner’s lawn, telephone pole or guard rail)
- Pedestrians or bicyclists
And, like all other collisions, a call to your insurance provider is required in order to make sure you’re covered in the event of a claim.

Do I have report an accident that only involved my own car and a fence which was not bruised. However my car is totaled?
If your car is a total loss, the insurance company will certainly need to know.
The collision centre is closed on sunday and monday is a holiday is it ok to report on tuesday?
i have already called the insurance company.
In an accident, how many days a driver have to report it to the police or collision center?
I had an accident in a parking lot which was covered in ice, is the landlord liable at all? Over $3000 harm to two vehicles
I got accident at my work on my Compny 5ton truck.it was nu fault and truck was under company insurance.i am not company went to insurance ir no but i didn’t report to police. This accident ‘ll effect my insurance history.
The driver who is found at-fault is typically responsible. You should check with your insurance company for utter details.
Check for damages on the vehicles involved in the collisions. If any vehicle has sustained harm of over $1000, the collision must be reported within twenty four hours. This should be done at the collision reporting centre nearest to the site of the car accident.
Yes, you should be OK if it was closed Sunday/Monday. Here is the website: http://www.collision-reporting-centre.com/
what if there was no harm to either car but the other person brought there car into a reporting centre. Do I still have to report anything
What happens if an accident isn’t reported for several days?
Can you please provide us with more detail around the car accident? There are many factors to consider.
Typically, a hit and run accident not reported to the police within twenty four hours, you could be considered at-fault for this accident.
Let us know the details and we’ll see if we can help you out.
What can happen if an injury is reported by the other driver (accident under $1000) to their insurance company, despite private arrangements to lodge the slight harm? (no police report)
If you are in a parking lot and parked vertically & another vehicle parks horizontally but you are able to wiggle yourself out after two hours in the snow but there is no harm and three months later the owners of the vehicle come up to you and say there’s harm and they wrote down your license plate number who is at fault? Should I have to pay for damages that I did not create?
Noelle – most parking lot accidents are deemed 50/50 at fault unluckily, as they are considered private grounds. Better speak to your broker/insurance provider for more details.
Once the accident is reported, your insurance company will likely find out, so it is best to contact your broker/agent instantaneously to notify them.
I hope this helps.
for an accident that happened two weeks ago, minimal to no harm on either car we exchanged info but accepted t as a fortunate day and left, how long after can you report damages unnoticed?
You have a year from the date of loss to make a claim. That said, establishing how and when the harm was caused may be difficult, if not unlikely in some situations. As such, coverage may be denied by the adjuster if it they can not establish how and when harm occurred.
Hi if my bike was stolen and then recovered . But only have third party cover do I have to report it to the insurance?
You should truly report all incidents to your insurance company. IF someone had an accident while driving that vehicle, you could be liable because you own the vehicle.
I recently got in a minor accident when a car stopped brief and my licence plate put a petite indentation in the bumper of the car in front of me. We determined not to call the police and not go through insurance. We exchanged information.
He received an estimate a week later. Can he or myself still file an insurance claim? Does he reserve the right to get the police involved to repair the damages?
Wha if I was driving someone else’s car. I was driving his car and it flipped. do I needto callmy insurance?
Yes, either party may still report the incident. If one party makes a claim, it is likely that the other party’s insurance company will be notified.
I hope this helps.
Typically when someone lends their vehicle to another licenced driver, they also in essence lend their collision insurnace. So a collision occuring would typically go through the possessor of the vehicles insurance policy. If there was any liability, it may go through your own policy (the drivers policy). It is best to speak to your insurance professional to get the details sorted out.
Was in a MINOR fender bender on Friday. The car in front of me had a green light, commenced to stir then slammed her violates on. I had some time to stop but did TOUCH her bumper. We pulled over and She and I both looked and spotted NO harm. She even said there was NOTHING there. I took her info anyways and gave her mine.
the police were not called, insurance companies were not called. I had a friend in the car as a witness of statements and how light the bump was
A day later her byfriend called to say the bumper was Cracked! There is no harm to my car at all, and the night of there was no harm. The bf told me he desired $630 cash to fix it, and also said he got a quote from a bod shop in town. I called the bod shop to see if the bumper was in fact cracked, as I found this story VERY hard to beleive and the proprietor told me it was NOT cracked but there were some superficial scrapes.
I am now doubtfull that my car or this Little bump created these scrapes and if im just getting taken for a rail.
Do I have to pay for these damages that i may or may not have made on this car.
Im throwing around the idea of suggesting half, in case my car may have made some harm, but im even doubting that too.
do you have to report if the car isn’t worth a one thousand dollars
Technically, you should always report any collision. Depending on the circumstance, another driver could report it to their insurance company and likely your company will be notified.
I have a question. I had an accident in a private parking lots in Ontario. I just sold the car so I didn’t have insurance and moving it from my parking space to another in the same parking lots. I hit the vehicle beside me. Now this car insurance ask for a meaty amount for insurance claim to me as I didn’t have car insurance at the moment. In Ontario its 50/50 responsibility. The amount asked by his insurance company is more then the value of his car. Should I pay only half? What should I do?
You should be seeking legal counsel for this situation as driving without insurance is illegal and you will need to be represented appropriately.
This could be a tricky situation for you, you are very likely best to discuss it with your insurance professional. Ask if you have ‘accident forgiveness coverage’.
If you are in Ontario, the other driver should be going through their own insurance company to have the harm paid for.
There is no assure that if you pay for the repair, that the other driver will not go to their insurance company anyway.
Earlier this afternoon I was in the outer left lane turning onto the cross street by my house. I embarked my turn on yellow and before I was finished it was crimson. As I was continuing, I noticed a car going straight in the opposite direction, before his/her light had turned green. I arrived home within a few minutes and a 2nd car had followed me to my house and informed me that the very first car had swerved around me as he was driving and ended up hitting a curb and “stalling” out. That driver told me that he had my license plate number and that he was an off duty patrolman who was advising me to go back as I, in his opinion, caused an “accident.” He drove off, stating that he was going to head back to where the other car was evidently stalled, and I followed shortly after to avoid having my license plate/car reported for fleeing a scene. When I arrived, neither the “stalled” car, nor the boy who followed me home were there. I circled the area twice, eyed no one and noticed no skid marks or harm to the curb. What should I do?
Since you didn’t actually collide with anyone and you seem jumpy about this situation, you could go to your local police station and notify them that someone impersonating a police officer followed you and let them know the situation.
I hit a man’s car with the back right side of m car on his back left side, scraping his gas tank door a little, I stopped my car and attempted not to pervert out (very first accident, seventeen year old driver) I displayed regret as best I could without being preoccupied with myself and transferred the man my license I agreed to pay any damages as soon as he knew how much it would cost for repairs.. I gave him my phone number and he wrote doown my information… What do I do now? I just wait for him to call me so I can pay? will it end there? I hope not to implicate my parents so as to not give them a hard time please tell me what I should do next, or if I did well ? D:
Typically if one driver reports the accident to his insurer, the other drivers insurer will be notified. I’m not sure if the other driver agreed not to go through insurance or not… I would suggest speaking with him. Typically, the driver who hits from behind is at fault. I would suggest you take a look through the IBC’s (Insurance Bureau of Canada) fault determination rules as this is what the claims adjusters will use as a guideline when conducting an investigation of fault for accidents. You can find out from your parents broker/your broker what your policy coverage details are. Sometimes there is an “accident forgiveness” endorsement added to coverage. If this is the case for your policy, your very first accident will not increase your rate.
I hope this helps.
Hi, my question is if someone accuse you of scraping their car while backing out of a parking spot and you know you did not hit it but they called the cops; and now it’s a he said – she said issue; and it was reported to the police but they issued a non-reportable report. Does the insurance company have to be notifiied. There is a scrape on this persons car and they were attempting to say it was me….and it wasn’t. BTW, looking at the scrape it could be touched out with a cloth. I don’t know if this person needed a scapegoat when telling their dad that the BMW had a scrape on it. I don’t think this person will even pick up the report from the police station. I think they indeed just needed a reason to tell their dad there was a scrape on his car.
This depends on what province you are in?
I hit a parked car in a parkinglot and we agreed to pay out of pocet, but I cant afford it. Should I report it to my insurance?
Had a minor accident.. was making a lane switch right and had my blinker on and was all clear as I leisurely switched over a car came speeding up and we collided causing a petite tend to the door and a cracked mirror, they took only my very first name and number and I agreed to cover damages as she was a much older lady.. even however she admitted she sped up to pass me. They got an estimate of one thousand two hundred which is unlikely, the car is worth most likely one thousand itself! Were worried they may claim but is a claim worth it in this case? And she didn’t even take my licence plate or last name? We still want to cover her costs but don’t want to be screwed here… need advice thanks !
Typically the driver in the moving vehicle is considered at fault. If you go through your insurance company this is likely what they will say. You can speak to your insurance professional or claims adjuster. Ask if you have accident forgiveness on your policy… this may permit you to avoid a rate increase on your very first accident.
very informative article no doubt
You will have to determine for yourself whether or not you want to pay for the harm but keep in mind that even however you may pay for the harm, there is no ensure that the other driver will not make a claim anyway.
I glided in a pole last night in the rain and was able to drive home… looking at my truck in the morning it looks like more harm than what I had originally thought. Will my insurance cover this?
You should call your insurance professional (broker/agent) and find out what your coverage is for your specific policy. Depending on your history and your policy, you may have an endorsement called accident forgiveness which will cover your very first accident without enhancing your rate. Each company is different, its best to speak to your insurance professional.
Why would someone take their vehicle to a reporting centre if there was no harm? Makes no sense….
I was involved in a minor accident where I hit someone in the back while we were waiting at a crimson light. I released my foot off the gas by accident and so it caused me to hit him in the rear bumper. However, there was a scrape about two centimeters long on his rear bumper. So we exchanged information and everything. So now my question is do we both go to the collision center or just one of us?
You would each need to go and pack out a report at the collision centre.
hey; i parked my car on street parking in downtown and came back from work it hd a big scrape on bumper and it came out from driver side , but this was my very first time i didnt know wat to do its been almost more than a week past since this happened. i got a estimate of 2600$ from the bod shop recommend by insurance company. wat should i do now cauze i came to know u should report a accident in twenty four hours to get a police report?
If you did not report it to the police, your insurance company may find you at fault.
Actually, two questions:
1. Who determines the estimate for the harm in an accident? If it can be immobile for $500, but some figure shop counts it >$1000, should this accident be reported to the police?
Two. In a “typical” front-to-rear hit accident due to a stop brief, will police issue a ticket to the “rear” driver upon reporting to collision center? No speeding, just did not break as good as the front car…
Thanks for your help here!
1. The estimates for harm are typically done through a assets shop. If the harm is greater than $1000 or bodily injury needs to be reported to the police and under $1000 you only have to go to the local collision reporting centre.
Two. Typically, the driver who hits from behind is considered at fault.
I hope this helps!
I was in a minor accident in Ontario. I hit a car from behind. We exchanged info.
We both checked each others car and eyed NO harm of any kind and
certainly no private injuries. He said he will call me if there is
something next day. No police report was made and no witnesses. Its
been five days and he hasnt called.
Assuming he doesnt call in the next few days,
should I talk to my Insurance Agent anyway, even if he or me dont make a claim?
Will reporting to insurance company without making a claim increase my premiums?
What if he calls and asks to lodge privately, or I hear from only after
many months or later claiming other damages like individual injury?
Should I call my insurance agent anyway to be on the safe side, yet venturing higher premiums?
Is there a time limit for accidents by which I have to inform my
agent or police in Ontario, else they may not honor the claim?
It is up to you whether or not you want to speak to your insurance professional. If the other driver does make a claim, it is likely that your insurance company will find out anyway. Your broker should be able to advise you. Depending on what the damages are, you may just want to lodge outside of insurance.
I was in an accident in my driveway, where someone was pulling in and side swiped my quarter panel and scraped my front bumper. I was in the vehicle but it was not commenced and it was stationary. What should I do?
I infrequent hit someone in the 1st week of July two thousand thirteen in Toronto Canada. After exploring both of our cars and since there was no harm to any car, we just collective our phone numbers and nothing else. We didn’t exchange insurance, address or license information and left. No report was packed.
Now after almost two months, this guys is calling me asking me to pay him one thousand five hundred for the uncommon bumper so that he can switch it.
I am worried and not picking his call, since there was no harm and he is just putting it on me. He is menacing me by going to police.
Can you tell me if by law I have to pay him anything or not. Should I be worried about any police report or anything else.
Please help. Thanks
Typically, in this situation, the driver in the moving vehicle is considered at fault. Take a look through the IBC’s fault determination rules if you like here: http://www.ibc.ca/en/car_insurance/documents/brochure/on-fault-determination-rules.pdf you can also speak to your claims adjuster as they will be the ones determining fault.
I hope this helps!
I would recommend that you go to a collision reporting centre to give your version of what happened
hi. i backed into a parked car that was on the road, right behind my driveway. it happened on a wednesday. I didnt expect the damages to be more than 800. i gave my info and said i’d pay it out of pocket as the harm was minimal. looking back, it would have been clever to take pictures. a long weekend happened and i hadn’t heard from them until the tuesday, where the very first quote is about 1900. I’m going to call my insurance company tomorrow to notify them of the accident. am i going to get reemed out for waiting so long? how much more do you see my insurance going up? I’ve been driving ten years and three years with the current insurance provider, no accidents or tickets.
You would be best to speak to your insurance provider. Often times an endorsement is added to a policy called accident forgiveness… if you have this with your current provider and have been claims free, you might be saved a rate increase. Each insurance company is different and each policy is different. Talk to your broker/agent to clarify what your policy details are and what effect this accident might have on you.
I was involved in a parking lot incident when I had parked my car and exited(my car parked and switched off on a legal parking space), someone came and hit me. He promised total compensation if lodged outside insurance, but after a day switched word and now suggesting lesser than 1/Two of the quote for my car. I feel pissed off since I was not at fault but still need to spend money to repair. Shall I report this to insurance? Will they rule the 50/50 by default and I be at fault?
You can speak to your insurance broker or claims adjuster. Typically, the driver of the moving vehicle is at fault. I hope this helps your decision.
I do see the insurance forgiveness in my policy. Is it safe to talk to insurance broker about minor accident and accident forgiveness? What if they report it to the insurance company. Are the premiums actually protected from increase on 1st accident? Does it affect upon renewal or company switch?
.Typically, accident forgiveness means that you would be protected from an increase if you were involved in your very first accident. Talk to your broker and they can explain it to you. It will still be reported regardless, however, if you stay with your current provider, your rate should not increase. If you are involved in another accident, that will likely increase your rate.
A driver backed into me in a parking lot. I followed him into the parking lot from the main street. He was driving down the aisle looking for a parking spot and braked abruptly when he noticed an empty spot to his left. When he stopped, I stopped. He put on his reserve lights to back up as he was too far ahead and couldn’t drive in from his position. When I eyed his switch roles lights come on, I placed my car in switch sides to back out of his way, but before I could stir, he didn’t check his mirrors, stepped on the gas and backed into me. I was not moving at the time of the collision. I had no time to stir. How does insurance determine fault? Is it still 50/50 because we are in a parking lot, or does it make a difference that I was not moving – my speed was zero at the time?
I was involved in car accident about a month ago.I was parked in a friends driveway when a man came out of another driveway and hit me ..he dreamed to pay out of pocket for the harm told me to get an estimate,,the estimate was 1,400 and he agreed. The car was immovable ,now nobody can get a hold of him.i do have his plate no#and name and phone no#.,nothing was reported.what are my options…..nancy
Typically, the driver in the moving vehicle is considered at fault, however, your claimjs adjuster will be the one determining fault so you can check with them to see what the details are of the investigation.
What you choose to do is a individual choice. You may choose to go to a collision reporting centre to report the accident. You can file a police report, contact your insurance company… whatever you choose to do. Depending on whether or not you had any witnesses, perhaps they could be of assistance?
I was in an accident about four months ago we did not exchange insurance info but just interchanged licience and phone info, he is now coming up to me with quotes for his car even tho’ it was not reported, do I still need to pay it? What will happen if I don’t?
I hit a car from behind causing minimal harm to her rear bumper. The estimate is for about $400 but she is asking me for $1000 for individual expenses due to the accident. My question is, if she hasn’t reported it to the police after forty eight hours and I pay for the harm to her car but not the extra, can she still report the collision to the police?
What you choose to do is a individual choice. If the other driver does make an insurance claim, it is likely that your company will be notified.
This is a question you should be directing to your local police department.
Hello, a few weeks ago my bf was driving my van, and got sideswiped by a car attempting to get over in the other lane, and somehow missed my big crimson van. They exchanged numbers, and her insurance info, and now she won’t come back our phone calls or texts. We do have her address as well so we can go there, but the only problem is my registration had just expired, and I believe my insurance had as well. Is she still responsible and have to pay for the damages, or am I screwed because of the registration being out of date?
Not having insurance is illegal – worse than no registration… I cannot advise you on how to proceed on this matter.
I met with an accident last week where my car skid and came to contact with another resulting some minor fender bender, we agree to lodge this outside of the insurance and exchanged phone numbers but his phone number seems to be wrong and he never call me. I have his insurance details however. Is there anyway I can contact his insurance to seek if the matter can be solved privately? Worried about insurance rate hike if he goes to insurance.
It is likely that if you contact the insurance company that a claim could be reported. You could report the accident to your local collision reporting centre if you choose. This is a private decision and I cannot advise you.
If you give a person permission to drive your car is he insured under your policy?
A general rule of thumb is that when you lend your vehicle to another fully licensed driver, you are in a sense lending them your insurance policy. So typically, yes, when you give another driver permission to driver your car, it is your policy that is effective.
If an oncoming vehicle in the wrong lane hits you ( he was approaching a designated lane for turning but determined to get a head embark before the lane was available) who is at fault or how would the insurance company process this collision. No one was charged at the seen.
You should speak directly with your claims adjuster as they will be the ones determining fault. You can also take a look at the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s fault determination rules here: http://www.ibc.ca/en/car_insurance/documents/brochure/on-fault-determination-rules.pdf
Hi there, I was backed into my friends car a few months ago. We determined not to go through insurance and I paid for the harm on her car. I left mine because I could not afford to at the time. This week, another driver rear ended my car and I filed a police report and determined to go through insurance. Now I’m wondering what happens with the harm previously done to my car by me backing in to my friends car? There’s harm on the bumper from that AND the fresh accident. What do I tell my insurance company happened? I absolutely can’t afford my insurance going up but I would like the harm that wasn’t my fault immobilized?
Hello My daughters car was hit by an uninsured driver .While parked on private property . she was not in the car and has insurance . now the other driver is unresponsive to our phone calls. His car had the most harm but her car had some harm what the best way to treat this.
I would suggest speaking to your local police department as well as your broker/agent and claims adjuster as to what the best way to go about this is. Without having all the details, they will be best equip to help you.
My vehicle was parked legally in the parking lot where I Iive. Then a female moving into my building hit it with a truck causing harm to it.
I was in my apartment at the time this occurred.
My neighbor witnessed the entire thing happen while sitting in his truck in his driveway. He honked his horn at them & told them they had better report it to the building
That’s when the driver (the lady moving in) went to the front office & asked the landlord whose vehicle it was that she had hit.
She then came to my door & told me that her friend had hit my vehicle with her truck. (Lie right there as she was driving)
I went outside & surveyed the harm & they said that they wished to pay out of pocket.
I said fine & went and got three estimates. And they said they would be in
I figured it would be around $1000 to $1500.00 to fix. Turns out the
lowest estimate was $2500.00. So then I reported it to police within the twenty four hrs.
The police officer that I reported it to got on the phone & called them to
verify the details & he got the true story out of them. That my neighbor was
driving, not the truck holder.
Two days later I hadn’t heard from them so I went to my neighbors door. She was pissed that I had gone to the police but I told her I was covering myself in this. She
then admitted that SHE was driving, not her friend. And that she had no money so
they determined to go through insurance.
Finishes up we have the same insurance company. I told my broker & they gave me an adjuster to phone. I called him & he said that because it was the other parties fault, I was given a different adjuster.
I eventually got a hold of the other adjuster & gave
her all the decent paperwork, police report etc. But then she emailed me back
& said that there was nothing she could do until she talked to the driver.
This was a month ago & obviously the dame that hit me is attempting to
hide hoping this will fade away. I haven’t seen her around the building but she
still lives here as I asked the manager.
This lady is a LIAR & manipulator & is attempting to get out of this.. This would have been a hit & run if my neighbor hadn’t seen them do it.
So what’s my next step? HELP?
If I was in my hubby’s truck and backed into our neighbour’s vehicle, whose insurance is affected? We are on each other’s insurance policies with two separate companies. He has collision on his truck but I don’t have collision on my car. He has had several tickets and accidents in a two year span. I have one ticket and one accident from two thousand seven on my record. The harm to the neighbour’s vehicle may or may not be over $1,000. We spotted they reported it (there’s a sticker near the harm) but they do not have either of our insurance info yet. We’d like to avoid going through insurance and are worried about whose insurance & rates will be affected. Any ideas?
i rear ended someone on sunday and they waited until today which is wednesday to get a quote for repairs the police were not contactes at the time of the accident they want me to pay cash for repairs is there a time limit for a accudent to be reported? is there anyway for me to get out of it?
I’m sorry, but a hypothetical question such as this might be best discussed with your broker directly.
If you would like to review the fault determination rules you can do so here:
About a month ago I was rear ended by a benz it was a youthfull dame the accident was pretty bad on her end as her benz was pretty smashed mine jus had a little bump. After the police officer wrote the accident report I spoke to her and she agreed to just pay me in cash.
I went ahead got my car motionless cost me one thousand five hundred after I called her to pay me back she turns down to pick up my call or even pay?
What can I do, can I still file a claim thru insurance since I got it stationary already
Any help will be very appreciated
You should be fine to file a claim. Talk to your insurance professional (broker/agent). Typically you have up to two years to file a claim.
because people are after money. I am going through the same thing right now
You can always visit your local collision reporting centre at any time to report an accident after the fact, or you could wait for her to contact you… I’m sorry, I cannot advise you what to do here as this is your individual choice to make.
In situations like this, you are best to speak directly to your claims adjuster as they will be the ones determining fault. Your insurance professional (broker/agent) can help you out with your questions regarding claims as well.
Typically the driver of the moving vehicle is considered at fault, so you should be able to submit a claim and pursue this. Driving without insurance is illegal and that would be an issue for the police as well. Give your insurance professional a call to discuss how to proceed.
Hello my wifey was making a turn where her and a pedestrian both had the right of way. She struck the pedestrian and she fell to the ground. There was no harm at all to my car. The police came and took a report. The ambulance also came, the lady was walking and appeared to be ok. The cops asked her if she was hurt , she said her gam a little. They took her to the hospital and that’s it. My question is do I need to contact my insurance company?
Yes, you should report this to your insurance company.
Frustrated mom, My fifteen year old son with a hardship license was sitting in school parking lot which is private property. Another boy opened the door to our suv he was driving and threw a dead duck into his lap my son freaked out and liquidated his foot from brake an hit a lady backing out of parking space. . no police report was filed the school police officer was already gone but notified said no report needed to be made bc it was private property . . neither party involved wishes to file on our insurance due to rate increasage. . the other lady wants us to pay the 1,700 harm to her suv . . i have Trio,800 harm to my suv which is to substitute bumper and grill . . I feel the boy who threw the dead duck into our suv into my son’s lap is responsible and should pay both our damages. . what is the best way to treat this pay the lady harm then file in civil court to recoup my cost for my repair and her’s or let the insurance company treat both and my insurance rates increase dur to neglience on part of the boy who has admit he willfully by pulling the prank caused the harm . . Thanks Frustrated mom
I am sorry to hear about the accident. This is something that you are best to discuss with your insurance company regarding who would be at fault in this case.
A very minor fender bender. 10-15mph. Both drivers check their cars and they are fine. No information is exchanged and they wave goodbye. What if one switch their mind? Is there a time framework? Coukd they do so with no informatin?
You can report the incident to a collision reporting center. If you have the other drivers licence plate number you can provide that you the police and your insurance company.
Inbetween the increase for the accident and any other rate increases that the insurance company implemented it is possible that your rate would dual. Check out insurancehotline.com to see if you can get a lower rate elsewhere.
That sounds odd. You can check into it further with the insurance company ombudsperson. You will be able to find that on the company website.
This is a tricky one. I would normally say, contact the policy but If you were driving without insurance you could face major penalties
It is likely that your insurance company will consider this an “at fault” loss if you do not have police report indicating that it was a hit and run.
Hi so what happens when the twenty four hrs pass and I haven’t reported to the collision center but am in contact with the other driver but that driver has went to the collision center?
Go to the collision center asap and let them know .
It is not too late to claim but you will be considered at fault for the loss and you might see a rate increase as a result.
You can go after up with the adjuster to see if any progress has been made. Ask the adjuster if you should proceed with the vehicle repairs and if you will have to pay a deductible.
Hi my daughter hit a car ion a mall parking lot , and waited for the driver , she gave her hone number and 2weeks later the possessor call and said the harm was over a $1000.00 and for her to pay up ,now her step dad has been a mechanic for over thirty yrs and dreamed more than one estimate and also desired him to fact the receipts over , the proprietor did neither and we attempted to call a few times to resolve it and never returned our calls , now two months later he goes to the police , where does my daughter stand with the payment ? And do the police even care at this point ?
If the accident happened in Ontario the other driver will have gone to his own insurance company to have the vehicle repaired. They will likely contact your insurance company and there will be an at fault loss registered against your daughter. Check with your insurance professional to be sure.
I accidently crumpled my back drivers door on my property. Our deductable is $1000 and the cost to fix it will be over 2-3000$ to fix. Is this worth going through insurance? I haven’t filed a claim in over fifteen years, and that was for vandalism to my car.
That is a financial decision that you will have to make. You should discuss the options with your insurance professional. They will be able to help you make the right decision for you.
You should report the “hit and run” harm to the police. If you have collision coverage, your insurance company may pay to repair the harm but you will likely have to pay your collision deductible.
Earlier today I was backing out of a driveway and backed up into a car parked on the street and hit his car door. The harm was minimal (when looking very close you could see a shallow dent) but I felt awful and since I didn’t know who’s car it was I left a note with my contact information. I suggested to pay outright for the damages, thinking it would just be a paintless dent removal which isn’t too expensive, however he got back to me telling he’s going to have to get his door substituted and a paint job, which I can assume is going to cost a lot more money then I have, so I said we’ll have to go through insurance and gave him all my insurance information. Do I need to contact my insurance company, or do I wait for him to make his claim and then they will contact me?
You are always best to let your insurance company know.
Anytime there is a collision both insurance companies should be advised.
I got hit in my rear left side end of my car in the highway. Fortunately it was just a side swept accident, but my car had a scrape lined all the way from the rear end to the rear door, harm was below a thousand so I didn’t report. The dude told me he’ll pay off. What should I do? Do I need to make a report to my insurance? I don’t want my insurance to go high plus it’s not my fault.
You are best to report the harm to a collision reporting center and your insurance company. If the accident is not your fault, your rates will not increase.
Collision reporting centers do not usually contact your insurance company.
In most provinces you must notify the police if the harm exceeds $1000.
It is fairly likely that person B’s insurance company will get in contact with person A’s insurance company.
You should contact your insurance broker to see what their advice is to you as I don’t know the province you are speaking about.
Most of the time insurance companies report accidents to the central data base instantly. The accident could should up on your record the next day.
Yes, you may be liable since you rear-ended the other vehicle.
Regardless of what happened to cause you to hit the guardrail you will likely be found to be at fault for the harm to the guardrail. Your insurance company may have to pay to repair it.
I am sorry I misunderstood. Either way, you will be considered at fault for the harm to your vehicle.
I think there must be more to this. It is not a crime to report your accident to a collision reporting center.
If you reported the accident to your insurance company they may pay the $500.00.
You are best to check with your insurance company to see what their rules are.
I have a problem that I need help. I just got into a car accident yesterday morning. He hit me from the back getting off the freeway right when I stoped at the stop sign. Ok my problem is we exchange insurance but me at the time was so jumpy I didn’t know it was expired. For some reason he also gave me his registeratiom form from the dmv having his vin #, licsen plate, name and his address. I reported to my insurance lady and now we have nothing in the other party but just his dmv registration. What can I do next? Can I call the police after the accident ? My BMW is very likely over one thousand of damages and now I have back agonies..
Yes. You should report it to the police today.
Thank you & good luck
Yes. Your father should report the accident to the police.
Contact the insurance company or your insurance professional to see if they can help you.
You can contact the ombudsperson who represents your insurance company. You can usually find their contact information on the company website. They may be able to help you.
You will have to discuss that with an adjuster who may call you. Each province and each insurance company may have different guidelines for that.
It depends on your province. In Alberta, is unlikely that you will see a premium increase in Ontario you might see an increase if your insurance company is notified.
Which province are you in?
It is likely that since you rear ended the other driver that you will be at fault for the harm.
Whether or not your licence will be suspended will depend on your driving record.
Since you rear ended the vehicle it is likely that it is your fault.
You should report the accident as soon as possible.
The accident is likely your fault. If you want your insurance company to pay to repair your vehicle, you will have to pay any collision deductible and you may see an increase in your insurance premium.
Your friend’s insurance company should pay to repair any harm to your house.
You should get his insurance information and contact the company.
If you had given permission for your friend to drive your vehicle, you likely do not have coverage for the harm to your car if your friend was impaired.
I WAS IN YELLOW LINE COMING UPTO SIGNAL TO MAKE A LEFT TURN BEHIND OTHER VEHICLES ALSO MAKING LEFT TURN WHEN A CAR CAME OUT OF A DRIVEWAY TO MY FAR RIGHT Arm SIDE AND HIT ME. HE WAS Attempting TO CUT ACCROSS TO GO LEFT TO OPOSING TRAFFIC LANES. WHO IS AT FAULT HERE?
If you were stopped waiting to make your turn, the other driver might be at fault.
If your daughter was making a left palm turn then it is likely that she is at fault.
I was talking about Ontario Canada. I was told by a police officer that a collision reporting center does not contact the insurance company.
You should dual check with your city for your laws.
I rear ended another car but there was no harm at all to either vehicles. We exchanged our contact information and insurance information. no police was called. Should i be reporting it to the insurance company in case she comes in for it after or attempts to sue me ?
The rule is that you should notify your insurance company.
It would likely be in your best interest as oftentimes an injury presents itself after the accident.
I am sorry but I don’t know. You should ask your insurance company what other type of proof will be acceptable to them.
Received a call that my car was involved in a car accident. Car is driven by my daughter who at the time of the alleged accident was a work. Supposedly the car was being driven by a youthful masculine, not of my ethnicity. How do I react to the insurance company?
You provide you insurance company with the details of where the car was at the time of the alleged loss.
Is it possible that your daughter loaned the car to a friend?
Yes you can still report the incident to the police.
What if you hit a deer and afterwards it runs back into the forest, does the one thousand harm reporting requirement still apply?
If the only harm was to your vehicle there is no need to report it to the police.
Since I don’t know where the accident occurred, I will response based on most provinces in Canada.
Your wifey’s insurance rate should not increase as a result of her being rear ended.
Most of the time, the driver who is reversing is considered to be 100% at fault.
It is possible that even however you pay to repair her harm, that she still contact the police.
Hello. I rear-ended a driver yesterday when merging into a highway. The gas was not accelerated, just foot lifted off when I thought he merged, but didn’t at the last minute as I was attempting to see past a truck to see if I could merge. When we pulled over, there were a few minor scrapes on both vehicles, nothing major. The man stated he had a family emergency and when I suggested him my phone number, his arms were wiggling and he could hardly write it down. He gave me his number while I gave him mine. No other information was exchanged. Afterwards, he took off in a hurry for his “family emergency” and nothing was reported that I know of to police. Should I be worried about anything I didn’t do that I should have done? I was fair and gave him my number, but still no phone call. Anything I should do now or just wait?
In Ontario you only have to report an accident to the police if there is bodily injury, the harm to both vehicles is over $1000 or you harm property.
So it sounds like you are OK. If you don’t hear from him in a few days you can attempt providing him a call
You should visit a collision reporting center and then you can report that he hit you while you were parked.
I CALLED THEM AND THEY SAID WE CAN ONLY MAKE A REPORT BUT SINCE IT IS LESS THAN 1000$ NOTHING IS GONNA BE DONE ON THEIR END AND I GOT GO THROUGH INSURANCE…I HOPE THAT DOESN’T JACK UP MY INSURANCE
Typically when you are hit while parked, there is no increase in your insurance rate.
Your option is to report the incident and let the insurance companies work it out.
the risk is that you might see an increase in your rate as it will be considered an at fault loss.
Hi, I recently hit a guard rail with my car. Being that my car was the only car involved do I need to file a police report ? And if so how long do I have to do so ?
In Ontario, you must report an accident if you harm property. so if the guardrail was bruised then you should report it.
If you are not in Ontario, please check with your local law enforcement
If the other driver rear ended you, you can report it to your insurance company and provide them with the other driver’s information.
If the other driver rear-ended you then they would be at fault-not you.
No you should not get a ticket for that.
I am sorry but I can’t reaction that for you. Except to say that that would be a reason for your son to have contacted the police on his own after the accident. Then each party could give their story to the police.
It is difficult to tell how much the harm would cost to repair. you could ask her for a copy of the estimates that she received. That might help.
Did they call you?
since you didn’t ensure that the brake was holding, you would be considered to be at fault.
If you are in a “no fault” province then each driver goes through their own insurance.
Hi, hope I’m writing this in the correct spot. I live in ontario. Two days ago the stud to my left drifted into my lane and hit my car doing harm kicking off from the rear of my driver side door and resumes back to over the rear wheel well. I reported it then got a call from other driver providing me heck for reporting. Now he is claiming that I hit him. Is it my word against his? What can I do to protect my self? Paul
It would be helpful if you have the contact information of any witness.
If the other person determines to go through insurance, does Shay have to report it to her insurance company or just wait for her own insurance company to contact her?
It’s always best to report it to your insurance company rather than the other party.
If you pay for the harm out of your own pocket, there is no assure that the holder of the vehicle will not attempt to make a claim anyway.
Talk with your insurance broker or agent and get their advice on this.
It is usually best to go through insurance. Most of the time the repairs are assured by the repair shop that the insurance company refers you to.
Do you have witnesses?
You should report the accident to your Mom’s insurance company.
He should go through is own insurance to have his vehicle stationary.
You can go to any figure shop to get an estimate. reminisce that if you have a $500 collision deductible and the harm to your car is $1000 you will only receive $500 plus you will have an at fault accident on your record.
You do take a chance when you lodge outside of insurance. It is your decision.
In Ontario a claim for an at fault loss regardless of how much is paid out will usually affect your premium.
If there is no harm to either vehicle then there is nothing to report.
It is likely that you are at fault since you were moving and the other vehicle was parked.
If there was no harm then there is no need to report to the city.
If there is no harm to the condo property and less than $1000 harm to your vehicle, you are not required to report it.
Hi, i hit a parked car in my neighborhood while i was reversing, i bruised the mirror and the front door. The total price of fixing is $1200 so i told the possessor that i hit it. Do they shar the blame for being parked on the side of the street? And is it the etiquitte for me to pay for a rental car while their car is being immovable
You will likely be found to be 100% at fault since your vehicle was reversing. If you choose to lodge outside of insurance, the holder of the other vehicle may insist that you pay for the rental car also.
It might. In the interest of protecting yourself and since you are not at fault, you should let the insurance companies treat it.
Your insurance company may not necessarily let you know that a third party has made a claim as any payment made to the third party would be made by his insurance company.
You will likely see an increase in your premium if the other driver makes a claim even if there is nothing paid on your vehicle.
Since the insurance companies are now aware of the incident, you might not be able to withdraw a claim. It may still go on your record and affect your premium.
Check with your insurance broker as in some provinces you may be permitted to reimburse them for any payout to avoid and increase.
You were hit while parked. The other driver is 100% at fault.
If you rear ended her, then you are likely at fault.
Your insurance company may pay to repair her vehicle (depending on the law where you live)
If she reports it, you should let your insurance company know.
If you are in Ontario, you can go to a collision reporting center. They will take your report there.
you should contact your insurance company. If the collision was not your fault then your insurance rate should not increase
I was making a left at a light and there was also a car infront of me making a left also so we were partially in the intersection when the light was turned from amber to crimson and the car infront proceeded as did I to clear the intersection but then all of a unexpected a car coming towards us on the opposite side of the road ran the crimson causing the car infront of me to hit the brakes abruptly and I ended up rear ending the car infront of me as the man who ran the crimson took off. Who would be at fault? would it just be me as the car who rear ended the car or would it be collective with the car I rear ended? I am worried as the person I hit wished to lodge without insurance but assumes I will pay for my own damages and hers. Please advise?
Most of the time regardless of the reason, the driver who rear-ends the vehicle in front is considered to be at fault.
You can pay for his harm outside of insurance but you should know that he can still make a claim and your insurance company could still find out. It’s a bit of a risk.
MY CAR WAS PARKED AT THE DEALER SHIP TO GET Immobile & SOMEONE (THEY Reject TO TELL ME WHO) HIT MY CAR. THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN. & THEY DIDNT FILE A POLICE REPORT. IS THAT ILLEGAL & WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?
You can file a police report yourself and the police can advise you of what to do next.
Reporting to a collision reporting center makes sense. the police officer can then help you determine what to do.
If no claim is made, then it will not affect his rate. Even if you make a claim it is likely that there will be no coverage for harm to the vehicle as your fiance had violated the policy conditions by leaving the scene and drinking.
Most of the time parking lot accidents are lodged on a 50/50 basis. if she is found even partially at fault, your rate might increase.
I was driving home from work this morning when out of nowhere a deer embarked to run across the highway towards me. I am a paramedic, and as such i have received advanced drivers training. With that being said i attempted to drive around the deer and almost avoided him, but the bugger ran into the side of my vehicle. At least i avoided hitting him head on. Anyway, he bruised my drivers side fender with his assets, bumper and headlight with his head and fetish mask with his antler. This may be expensive, however im wondering if claiming this through insurance will increase my rates? Ive already spoken to police and i know i dont have to report anything so im not violating any laws here. ive been given the option to meet the police officer tomorrow and file the report if i want to claim it. I have utter coverage and understand the comprehensive aspect to things. My issue is i have two collisions in the past and was threatened that any more and i was cut off insurance. This is clearly not my fault, so my question is if i claim this will i get cut off? I should also note that im a twenty two year old masculine living in ontario, canada.
my vehicle was involved in an accident …. Insuraqnce is paid up to date but have an expired license plate sticker. Is insurance company still obligated to cover claim?
I have a motorcycle registered under my name and insured under me, as I am waiting to take a motorcycle training class. My bf, who doesn’t have a motorcycle license and is not under my insurance, borrowed it yesterday and someone cut him off and hit their brakes instantly. My bf hit his brakes quickly but the front tire of the bike still tapped under the person’s bumper. They both pulled over and assessed that there was no harm to the car or the bike, so the other driver told him there was no need to call the police. He asked for my beau’s phone number and took a picture of the license plate. My beau left after this. The person then called him 30-45 minutes later telling him he had called the police and was attempting to file a report but the police did not believe him because there was no harm to his bumper and requested my bf go back to the scene of the accident to explain to police that he did in fact hit his car and file a formal report. My bf did not go back, as per our understanding you don’t have to file a report if there is no harm. I have not called my insurance yet. What should I do? I am very panicked as he is not under my insurance and neither of us have a motorcycle license.
car was parked in parking lot, another car bumped into side of car, harm was about 1,100 but was not reported only got drivers license info no police report was made now other driver wants to make a police report. what are your thoughts on how to treat.
Please Help to determine,
My wifey was driving my car during the intense snow fall and weather was truly bad and roads were covered with black ice.. She was driving very cautiously but one driver determined to switch his mind at the last minute to get into express lanes exist from collector and he/she hit my wifey’s car on the front right corner and my wifey’s car hit the car to her left. The driver who hit my wifey’s car ran away and my wifey or the other car driver doesn’t have any information about that vehicle. The car which was left to my wifey’s car doesn’t have any harm but most of the harm has happened to our car.
I would like to know what happened in this screenplay? How insurance company determines the fault? I have total coverage on my car with one Accident Forgivness but my wifey is not listed on my policy.
This morning I was driving down the highway. There was an accident to my right, and I had seen the ambulance before and gotten into the left palm lane in prep. Someone in front to the right cut me off. The roads weren’t very icy, and I was only going about fifty, but when I braked too hard, my car commenced to spin out. I didn’t want to smash into the concrete, so when I straightened out I thought it was safer to head to the other lane. I didn’t realize there was another car in my blind spot, which I bumped (my rear right bumper with her left front bumper). We both pulled over to the side, however I pulled onto the left side and she pulled onto the right. There was too much traffic for either of us to go to the other side to investigate the cars. I got out of my vehicle and eyed that there was no harm on my side, and as far as I could tell from across the road, there was no harm on hers. I attempted to tell her this, but obviously I have no idea if she could tell or not. She did not roll down her window to attempt to talk with me, and I thought at the time that she had her left blinker on, tho’ with hindsight it might have been her hazard lights. Because of this, I thought it would be find to get back on the highway, but now I’m a bit worried. There appeared to be no harm on either end, but do I have to report the accident anyway? And if I don’t, what are some possible consequences?
What right to have to see what ticket the other driver received. I received a ticket after being hit at the rear of my vehicle during a turn. However, i noticed that the officer also passed the other driver a ticket. Do i have a right to know what ticket the other driver received? its not on the accident report.
Just yesterday i was driving, and because i missed a parking spot along the side of the street, I determined to switch sides back to it so i could park. I look behind me, check all my mirrors and do not see any car behind me and begin to switch roles quickly, i check again, and dont see any car, then, BAM i run into the grill of a petite car driving behind me that was in my blindspot.
Myself and the other man get out of our cars to cabooses the harm. Nothing on my rear bumper, but i cracked his plastic grill and slightly dented the rubber hood of his car.
He seemed reluctant to go through insurance, so we interchanged cell numbers and very first names and he said he was going to call me back in a few days.
Because he never took any of my info besides very first name and cell number, and didnt record my license plate number or take pictures of the harm, if he calls me back, do i even legally have to pay anything he asks for to fix the harm?
Four months ago i bumped someone’s bumper in a parking lot in alberta. I waited for them for over half an hour but they never came so i left mt number. They waited four months to contact me with an estimate. What should i do?
Please help, my friend was driving in my vehicle through an intersection and hit a lady making a left turn. Road conditions were bad and he glided into her. This all while a yellow light was activated.
Very first, who is at fault?
2nd, what happens now that my twenty three year old friend has no insurance of his own? Will my company drop me?
I had an accident due to the weather I hit my front bumper with the remaining snow that wasn’t flowed on the street while parking on the side. What can you suggest or recommend me to do?
This morning I was in a right turning lane where the oncoming traffic light had just turned green, the lady in front of me seemed like she was going to make the turn before the traffic embarked to go through the intersection but she did not. As I was looking at the oncoming traffic at this time I did not notice she had not made the turn and as I was creeping up I tapped her bumper. We both put our cars in park and put our hazards on. She got out of her car and looked at her bumper and also looked at my front end and said there is no harm and swinged me off. At this time I was still in my car and had my window flipped down. When she acknowledged me and informed me it was okay I apologized and that it was it. So we did not collect any information from eachother and as this was my very first accident I am not sure what I should do now. When I got to work I looked at my front bumper and there is a puny crack but the bumper was bruised before anyways so I am not worried about it. My only concern now is whether or not I report this and who I would report it to if needed.
Any advice would be helpful, thank you
I was pulling out of my condo building’s parking lot. My car was on the sidewalk and I leisurely flipped it onto the road to see passed a large snowbank and a snowplow that was driving by. My car was at a accomplish stop when my neighbour’s car rear-ended me. She wasn’t paying attention and didn’t notice that I had stopped. Will my insurance company consider her at fault for the accident or can she claim 50/50 responsibility since her car was still partially on our condo parking lot (private property)?
Most of the time the driver who is making the left turn is considered to be at fault.
My car was side swiped when someone in his truck came from behind and pulled out in front of me to go into a drive thru. I was driving past the parking lot to the drive thru, if he would have waited five seconds it would have been his turn. He got out of his vehicle and asked me to pull forward to a clear spot to exchange information. He gave me his name and cell phone number and I gave him mine as well, he also said that it was his company’s truck, then he told me to get an estimate and get back to him so I said ok. It wasn’t until later that I learned that I should have gotten his insurance and driver’s license. I got the estimate which was around $1900, and when i called to tell him, he said that was pretty expensive for something he considered both of our fault. He said he was going to contact his HSE manager and call the police to file a report. His HSE manager called me and said that after their “investigation” they determined that I was at fault and would not cover the harm. I called my insurance company to report the incident and have been waiting for the adjustor to do their investigation, I know this isn’t my fault and I feel like I’m being bullied by this company. My friends are telling me to contact the manager of the company and to file a police report myself. In Alberta, a report does not have to be made if the harm is under $2000 and it’s been a duo of weeks now. Can I make a report still and would it even make a difference?
As I was driving down the highway to work, this is during morning traffic (6-7am), I was rear ended while slowing down as that was the flow of traffic (picking up then slowing down). I had a safe distance from the driver ahead of me, but the lady claimed I slowed down too rapid. Obviously that’s what you do when you’re not attempting to rear end somebody. Anyways, she was running late to work, so all I took was her name, her number and her license plate. Is this information sufficient enough to report? And how late could I report, albeit the plan is to report after I get off work. I did take pictures of my harm. How will the police indicate who’s liable?
Last night I was headed to a family friends house I was driving down his street and when I came near his house I had noticed I had just slightly passed his house as the area was dark. I then reversed not realizing there was a car behind me and I had just tapped his car lightly. I checked his car and my car for harm there was minimal harm a minor scrape to both our cars that could lightly be buffed out. He desired insurance information claiming it was his friends car at very first then telling it was his parents car, however I preferred not to go through insurance and determined we would lodge it with some cash. We didn’t exchange any information other than license plate numbers as he was leaving he mentioned that he would give the money to his parents and if it was not enough he has my license plate numbers. So I am not sure what that means if he does go to a collision center how would I know if he did?
IF you ” did not collect any information from each other” then chances are neither of you can file a decent collision report so I would suspect that for both of you this accident never occurred.
Your friend is covered under your insurance while you let him drive your vehicle.
Having said that, typically the left turning driver is at fault so you can relieve 😉
They will have a hard time proving that the harm they want to report after four months is originated by your hitting their vehicle. Deny responsibility in this example. The cargo of proof is on them now.
IF you don’t have any contact information for the other driver and he seemed hesitant, you can play it safe and go report it anyway to the collision centre.
If you think that the harm to BOTH cars is under $1000, no reporting is required.
In 99.9% of the cases the driver who rear-ended is the one at fault.
Yes, the information you collected is sufficient to report. The police will locate her address and insurance info from her MTO record to pack in the blanks.
In attempting to determine to fix on own our report to insurance. I backed up into friends car parked in my driveway; no harm to my truck but $1500 to her car
How much% increase can I expect in policy? I have clean record I’m over fifty no claims…..
Hello, My friend backed into somones car at a crimson light (she was over the crosswalk, so she reversed and didnt see the car behind her). Obviously she is at fault, the only harm apparent on the person’s car who she hit was chipped paint, which was acknowledged by both parties. They exchanged info. Two weeks later the person is claiming that she needs the grill, bumper and rubber hood stationary. My friend went to the reporting centre to see if a the collision was reported, it turns out the collision was not reported. What are my friends rights in this situation, she doesnt have photos, but she does have exchanged text with the other driver in which she says she doesnt see any harm on the car.
It happened in Ontario BTW
i got into a car accident four weeks ago, we dont have a police report but I call the insurance. The unsurance knows about the accident. The insurance told me that someone is going to contact me to take pictures of my car, and also they say that they were going to send me some documents that I need to response them and send them back. The person that I had the accident with keeps calling me, texting me but I am just waiting for the insurance. Can she sue me?. I response her calls, messages she has my information. I am just waiting for the insurance.
Hi I had a collision just now I was at the gas station in line there’s a long line of cars waiting for other cars to finish packing gas..after five minutes waiting the SUV in front of me reversed back to me..and bumped my car..he came out and checked my car and he said there’s no harm I came out and checked it and no scrape ..he said he’s back is plastic so there can’t .be harm I said OK..I came back to my car to get my phone to take picture of his license number just in case but when I looked back hes gone he drove away..should I report it to o.p.p in case he report it to police and tell different story maybe just in case.or should I leave it alone
I hit a car in a parking lot and scraped the rear bumper of that car, no dents. the fellow got two quotes of around. $1300 each, which I think is high. My car has minimal harm so I am not going to fix it. Should I go through insurance? He indeed does not want me to go through insurance, will it affect his? How badly will my rates go up? I don’t truly have that amount of cash free to pay it out but could sway the deductible.
I was in an accident which I think I wasn’t at fault about three years ago. No charges were laid but the other driver and myself were found 50% at fault according to the insurances. After getting my insurance renewal, my rates went up. When I searched for lower rates, I was told that I was now found fully at fault. Shouldn’t I have been advised of this in any way?
I was hit by a taxi driver who crossed a solid yellow line on a residential street attempting to race past me while I was making a left turn. He hit the front driver side quarter of my car with his front right quarter. I went to the reporting centre and did the reporting thing and while getting a sympathetic ear from the officer when it came time to get the fix done the adjuster called it no fault. This was a clear case of the taxi driver making an illegal pass on a clearly marked street and driving prompt enough to cause considerable harm to my car.
No matter what I said to the adjuster he insisted that it was a 50/50 script. The pictures of the harm clearly display that it was not and the road was a no passing zone that he hit me in.
I am disturbed by the adjuster’s attitude which struck me as it was not worth fighting for as my cars book value was below write off value. I had the car immovable after taking the insurance money and adding extra money to get it stationary.
Why is it that just making the process go swift is what happened rather than do the right thing when the information clearly displayed how this accident happened ?
My wifey stopped at a crimson light on a uphill slope and was front-ended by a car that stopped in front of her. The driver of that car was very apologetic and suggested moving to the nearest parking lot for information exchange. My wifey reported the accident to our insurance company and provided all data in regards to the party at fault. In several days our insurance company informed her that the 2nd party blamed her for the accident (rear-ending).
As a result we paid half of the deductible for the repair an d my wifey’s driving record was blemished. So, don’t be gullible, people. And, by the way, can we complain to any agency and release the name of this liar? Any comments are appreciated.
You have two separated issues in here. Very first, when she was blocking you in, you should have told her to stir, amicably. I don’t think she would deny. Next, if she turn down. Why? You could give her five minutes. If she still reject, call the police and run right into her car. What she had done was committing a criminal offence – illegal confinement. In the process, make sure you have gathered enough evidence to prove your case.
You were at fault but the ‘victim’ went away. What more can you ask for? At times, some experienced drivers, based on the feel of the influence that the vehicle did not sustain significant harm or maybe the bump was not in such a good form anyways, so they don’t care as much. You were so fortunate they did pull a prompt on you.
Witness for what? For you were at fault?
About a week ago I was hit at a parking lot by a Co worker he was uninsured and we agreed he would pay for damages. It’s been a week and no switch. Can I still report it to my insurance?
We all have a lesson to learn. If that person had alcohol in his breath, regardless, call the police. This is not hard-hearted, if he continued driving under the same condition, someone might get hurt.
Why did you take a picture of the bumper and the harm?
The other vehicle comes out from a private road to a public road, of course the other car is at fault.
Let’s make this very clear. A driver has an absolute responsibility no to hit anything in the line of traveling. Please do not point finger telling the one stops in front of you has no reason to, your responsibility is to keep safety stopping distance and look out.
Don’t you know you have an absolute responsibility not to hit anything in the line of your traveling direction?
What if my car was bruised by falling pinecones on private property where I was told and compelled to park against my wishes due to the fear of harm to my vehicle from the falling pine cones. Estimated bruised caused was three thousand five hundred dollars. Should the person responsible for the private property cover the damages or am I out of luck.
This is my story where I work I was in a rush getting there i park yeah, the way I parked it was a little out the line, this was on a Tuesday, now its Friday and they said “i hit a car” let me refresh my memory i know i didn’t hit a car scrape a car or anything, what i want to know before i go to HR is why are they telling me something now if it happened days ago. Is this right because it pisses me off that my car has no scrapes or nothing on it, but this person i assume hit i don’t know them i haven’t seen this car i only spoke to a fellow who takes reports. . . Can someone give me info on this or opinion
From phoenix az
A car was backing up at a Mcdonald’s drive thru..swift enough I thought he was going to hit my car,so I reversed not realizing a pick up truck was behind me. I hit her front bumper causing dent to her licensed plate. She asked me my driver’s license and name with phone number and told me she was going to call me the next day to let me know if there’s further harm because it’s hard to see at the time it was around eight pm. She told me that if she doesn’t call until noon the following day it means there’s no issues. The next day, sure enough she called and said she just noticed that her front bumper shifted a little bit. What’s are legal responsibilities? Should I report this but it’s Good Friday. Or should I wait for her estimates.. I’m just worried she is just after the money.. She sounds so suspicious. But it was just a minor harm. Please help.. This is my very first time..nit sure what to do. Thanks
What if both parties didn’t report a minor accident to the collision centre within forty eight hours. Would the driver at fault be still responsible for any cost of damages to the other party? No exchanges of insurance involved, just names and phone numbers.. Thanks!!
I am an insurance agent and deal with these types of questions daily. It doesn’t matter why you backed up. If you backed into another vehicle you are at fault. If you do not have claims forgiveness your rates will increase. Normally you will pay a 70% surcharge. This surcharge will come down only a little bit each year. You will proceed to be surcharged for six years after this collision. Even if you do not contact your insurance company, the other person may. Do the math. If you think the other man is attempting to scam you, I say that’s too bad. Consider the alternative. Again do the math. Why should the other man live with a scrape on his bumper … it wasn’t his fault. If he was driving a old car with lots of dings, yea he’s going to put the money in his pocket. Again consider the alternative. Pay to paint his bumper that you may or may not have scraped. Then suggest to buy him dinner at the Keg. You will save thousands. If you have claims forgiveness, then you have a decision to make. Do you want to use up your one freebie for such a puny amount of cash. Don’t get caught up in “He’s tearing you off” You messed up. it is a plain as that. Again I say “Do the math”.
I am an insurance agent and response these questions daily. Yes you can still report this to your insurance company. Technically you are supposed to report an accident to your insurance as soon as you can. The reason you gave is understandable. The other party said they wished to pay. You waited and now it shows up they are not willing to pay for damages. Go ahead and call them. In Ontario your own insurance company pays anyway. It does not affect your insurance rate if your parked car is hit by a third party. If you identify the person, you do not have to pay your deductible.
The most significant part of this issue is that the other person is driving without insurance. This is a very serious offence and you should do your part and help getting this driver off the road. It is up to a $Five,000.00 fine and from what I have seen, this is the amount the court sets even for the very first offence. I hope I have helped.
Its too late for you Bob but I would like to comment in order to help someone else in this type of situation. If you are hit by someone else and they admit fault. Have them write a note at the time or record them admitting it on your brainy phone. If they turn down, then call the police. Attempt to get the names and phone numbers of someone who witnessed the incident. A person who is at fault is remorseful when face to face to with you, but once they leave and talk to their spouse friends or whoever and begin thinking about the consequences, they now embark thinking about how to wiggle off the hook. Get a written or recorded statement at the scene.
I think most people would agree with you that the accident was the taxi drivers mistake and was due to his carelessness and impatience. I am an insurance agent and agree with you. HOWEVER, your insurance company is correct. In fact they have actually helped you out by finding fault at 50/50. Most accident scripts are covered in “Fault Determination Rules” and in your case as much as it deepthroats, Fault is with you. Here’s why. Basically the other vehicle has the right to overtake you he has switched lanes to pass and then you turned entered the lane turning left in front of them. Almost the same as turning left into the lane of an on-coming vehicle. Who the heck looks into their mirror when turning left into a driveway. it is unfortunate but it is the way it works. Just like the person who is waiting to turn left and the light turns yellow. Looks like everyone is stopping so you proceed. Someone not paying attention to the yellow proceeds through the light and hits you. You were at fault for turning into the path of the dummy who ran the yellow. Here’s another one to very careful of. You want to pull out onto a road and turn left. someone stops and waives you out. maybe its three lanes broad, A truck stops in the 2nd lane for you and waives you out. someone is approaching the back of the stopped truck and comes in the third lane to pass it. Guess what, you just entered that lane and get hit. Your fault! Just be aware of these potential issues. It doesn’t matter if the police charge you or not… its your fault.
50% at fault is the same as 100% at fault. There may be some insurance companies who do not rate (charge extra) for a 25% at fault accident, but they will be few and far inbetween. So if you are partially to blame, Expect to pay more.
I am not sure if you are in Ontario or not. This reaction is basically the same no matter which province you are in. In Ontario we have what is called ” No Fault Insurance” what that mean is that your insurance company pays to fix your car or cover minor individual injuries no matter who’s fault the accident was. So the other person should call their insurance to have and damages repaired. The person who is not at fault will not have their premiums increase nor do they have to pay for any collision deductible when their car is immobilized. If the you are in another province, you still don’t have to pay for the other guys vehicle repairs if you are at fault. Their insurance will fix their car and collect from your insurance company if you are at fault. This is called subrigation. ( Not sure if I spelled that decently) Again i’m not sure if there are other issues around this accident because you mentioned waiting for a police report. I will guess that you both are blaming each other for the accident. if this is the case, if one of you does not have collision coverage’s your insurance company will not authorize the repair of the vehicle until fault can be determined.
Same thing just happened to me. Except it was in a stop light the lady got all mad after she witnessed that nothing happened to her car or mine. So she asked for my insurance and my drivers licenses to write down information. While she was doing that a cop passed by and asked if everything was okay, the lady said yes and the cop left. So i asked the lady is it necessary for me to call the insurance as well, and she said yes, but i don’t see why i should call if she’s the one who is going to call.
I rear ended someone while driving a rental. I was using the rental utter coverage insurance as I didn’t have any insurance. I am now in the process of buying my 1st car and i want to know if the accident will be on my record and do i have to report it when applying for a quote?
Had a wreck two weeks ago
I was merging on to the highway to get off an exit
Traffic was bad the car in front me slammed on her violates by the time I spotted her break light it was to late for me to stop….I stepped on my brakes to avoid an accident but didn’t work my front bumper was bruised and scrapes on her car police came and I had to tow my truck because the bumper got stuck to my tire. The lady didn’t ask for my insurance or anything since nothing major happened to her car after two weeks she know wants to make a claim to her insurance I received a letter and my name is missed spelled….I have no idea what to do because she never asked me for my details or anything. She most likely got a copy of the police report and got my address but name is misspelled….should I go ahead a contact my insurance
I was recently involved in an accident where I was rear ended, but the harm to both vehicles were very minor. I informed the insurance company regarding this, but the other driver says he’s willing to lodge. Should I still report it to a collision centre?
Because they want to cover their insurance liabilities.
Also, what is a “Uncommon” hit? Do you mean a Rear hit? Grammar people.
When To Report a Car Accident, When Not To and The Consequences
Article updated to include movie, and switch in Ontario’s reporting requirement.

Do I have report an accident that only involved my own car and a fence which was not bruised. However my car is totaled?
If your car is a total loss, the insurance company will undoubtedly need to know.

I was driving his car and it spinned. do I needto callmy insurance?
Yes, either party may still report the incident. If one party makes a claim, it is likely that the other party’s insurance company will be notified.
I hope this helps.
Typically when someone lends their vehicle to another licenced driver, they also in essence lend their collision insurnace. So a collision occuring would typically go through the proprietor of the vehicles insurance policy. If there was any liability, it may go through your own policy (the drivers policy). It is best to speak to your insurance professional to get the details sorted out.
Was in a MINOR fender bender on Friday. The car in front of me had a green light, began to stir then slammed her violates on. I had some time to stop but did TOUCH her bumper. We pulled over and She and I both looked and witnessed NO harm.
The bf told me he desired $630 cash to fix it, and also said he got a quote from a assets shop in town. I called the assets shop to see if the bumper was in fact cracked, as I found this story VERY hard to beleive and the possessor told me it was NOT cracked but there were some superficial scrapes.
I am now doubtfull that my car or this Lil’ bump created these scrapes and if im just getting taken for a rail.
Now this car insurance ask for a massive amount for insurance claim to me as I didn’t have car insurance at the moment. In Ontario its 50/50 responsibility. The amount asked by his insurance company is more then the value of his car. Should I pay only half? What should I do?
You should be seeking legal counsel for this situation as driving without insurance is illegal and you will need to be represented appropriately.
This could be a tricky situation for you, you are most likely best to discuss it with your insurance professional. Ask if you have ‘accident forgiveness coverage’.
If you are in Ontario, the other driver should be going through their own insurance company to have the harm paid for.
There is no ensure that if you pay for the repair, that the other driver will not go to their insurance company anyway.
I hit a man’s car with the back right side of m car on his back left side, scraping his gas tank door a little, I stopped my car and attempted not to pervert out (very first accident, seventeen year old driver) I showcased regret as best I could without being preoccupied with myself and passed the man my license I agreed to pay any damages as soon as he knew how much it would cost for repairs..
BTW, looking at the scrape it could be pawed out with a cloth. I don’t know if this person needed a scapegoat when telling their dad that the BMW had a scrape on it. I don’t think this person will even pick up the report from the police station. I think they truly just needed a reason to tell their dad there was a scrape on his car.
They got an estimate of one thousand two hundred which is unlikely, the car is worth very likely one thousand itself!
You will have to determine for yourself whether or not you want to pay for the harm but keep in mind that even tho’ you may pay for the harm, there is no assure that the other driver will not make a claim anyway.
I slipped in a pole last night in the rain and was able to drive home… looking at my truck in the morning it looks like more harm than what I had originally thought.
You would each need to go and pack out a report at the collision centre.
hey; i parked my car on street parking in downtown and came back from work it hd a big scrape on bumper and it came out from driver side , but this was my very first time i didnt know wat to do its been almost more than a week past since this happened. i got a estimate of 2600$ from the assets shop recommend by insurance company. wat should i do now cauze i came to know u should report a accident in twenty four hours to get a police report?
If you did not report it to the police, your insurance company may find you at fault.
Actually, two questions:
1. Who determines the estimate for the harm in an accident? If it can be stationary for $500, but some assets shop counts it >$1000, should this accident be reported to the police?
Two. In a “typical” front-to-rear hit accident due to a stop brief, will police issue a ticket to the “rear” driver upon reporting to collision center? No speeding, just did not break as good as the front car…
Thanks for your help here!
1. The estimates for harm are typically done through a bod shop.
We both checked each others car and spotted NO harm of any kind and
certainly no individual injuries.
What if he calls and asks to lodge privately, or I hear from only after
many months or later claiming other damages like private injury?
Should I call my insurance agent anyway to be on the safe side, yet taking a chance higher premiums?
Is there a time limit for accidents by which I have to inform my
agent or police in Ontario, else they may not honor the claim?
It is up to you whether or not you want to speak to your insurance professional. If the other driver does make a claim, it is likely that your insurance company will find out anyway. Your broker should be able to advise you. Depending on what the damages are, you may just want to lodge outside of insurance.
I was in an accident in my driveway, where someone was pulling in and side swiped my quarter panel and scraped my front bumper. I was in the vehicle but it was not commenced and it was stationary. What should I do?
I uncommon hit someone in the 1st week of July two thousand thirteen in Toronto Canada. After studying both of our cars and since there was no harm to any car, we just collective our phone numbers and nothing else.
When I witnessed his switch roles lights come on, I placed my car in switch sides to back out of his way, but before I could stir, he didn’t check his mirrors, stepped on the gas and backed into me. I was not moving at the time of the collision. I had no time to budge.
The car was stationary ,now nobody can get a hold of him.i do have his plate no#and name and phone no#.,nothing was reported.what are my options…..nancy
I was in an accident about four months ago we did not exchange insurance info but just exchanged licience and phone info, he is now coming up to me with quotes for his car even tho’ it was not reported, do I still need to pay it? What will happen if I don’t?
I hit a car from behind causing minimal harm to her rear bumper. The estimate is for about $400 but she is asking me for $1000 for individual expenses due to the accident. My question is, if she hasn’t reported it to the police after forty eight hours and I pay for the harm to her car but not the extra, can she still report the collision to the police?
What you choose to do is a private choice. If the other driver does make an insurance claim, it is likely that your company will be notified.
This is a question you should be directing to your local police department.
Hello, a few weeks ago my beau was driving my van, and got sideswiped by a car attempting to get over in the other lane, and somehow missed my big crimson van.
I met with an accident last week where my car skid and came to contact with another resulting some minor fender bender, we agree to lodge this outside of the insurance and interchanged phone numbers but his phone number seems to be wrong and he never call me.
If an oncoming vehicle in the wrong lane hits you ( he was approaching a designated lane for turning but determined to get a head begin before the lane was available) who is at fault or how would the insurance company process this collision.
I absolutely can’t afford my insurance going up but I would like the harm that wasn’t my fault immovable?
Hello My daughters car was hit by an uninsured driver .While parked on private property . she was not in the car and has insurance . now the other driver is unresponsive to our phone calls. His car had the most harm but her car had some harm what the best way to treat this.
I would suggest speaking to your local police department as well as your broker/agent and claims adjuster as to what the best way to go about this is. Without having all the details, they will be best equip to help you.
My vehicle was parked legally in the parking lot where I Iive. Then a damsel moving into my building hit it with a truck causing harm to it.
I was in my apartment at the time this occurred.
My neighbor witnessed the entire thing happen while sitting in his truck in his driveway. He honked his horn at them & told them they had better report it to the building
That’s when the driver (the damsel moving in) went to the front office & asked the landlord whose vehicle it was that she had hit.
That my neighbor was
driving, not the truck possessor.
Two days later I hadn’t heard from them so I went to my neighbors door. She was pissed that I had gone to the police but I told her I was covering myself in this. She
then admitted that SHE was driving, not her friend. And that she had no money so
they determined to go through insurance.
Completes up we have the same insurance company. I told my broker & they gave me an adjuster to phone. I called him & he said that because it was the other parties fault, I was given a different adjuster.
I ultimately got a hold of the other adjuster & gave
her all the decent paperwork, police report etc. But then she emailed me back
& said that there was nothing she could do until she talked to the driver.
This was a month ago & obviously the doll that hit me is attempting to
hide hoping this will fade away. I haven’t seen her around the building but she
still lives here as I asked the manager.
This doll is a LIAR & manipulator & is attempting to get out of this..
About a month ago I was rear ended by a benz it was a youthfull damsel the accident was pretty bad on her end as her benz was pretty smashed mine jus had a little bump. After the police officer wrote the accident report I spoke to her and she agreed to just pay me in cash.
I went ahead got my car stationary cost me one thousand five hundred after I called her to pay me back she rejects to pick up my call or even pay?
What can I do, can I still file a claim thru insurance since I got it immobile already
Another boy opened the door to our suv he was driving and threw a dead duck into his lap my son freaked out and eliminated his foot from brake an hit a lady backing out of parking space. . no police report was filed the school police officer was already gone but notified said no report needed to be made bc it was private property . . neither party involved wishes to file on our insurance due to rate increasage. . the other lady wants us to pay the 1,700 harm to her suv . . i have Trio,800 harm to my suv which is to substitute bumper and grill .
Hi my daughter hit a car ion a mall parking lot , and waited for the driver , she gave her hone number and 2weeks later the proprietor call and said the harm was over a $1000.00 and for her to pay up ,now her step dad has been a mechanic for over thirty yrs and wished more than one estimate and also dreamed him to fact the receipts over , the proprietor did neither and we attempted to call a few times to resolve it and never returned our calls , now two months later he goes to the police , where does my daughter stand with the payment ?
The stud told me he’ll pay off.
My BMW is most likely over one thousand of damages and now I have back anguishes..
I WAS IN YELLOW LINE COMING UPTO SIGNAL TO MAKE A LEFT TURN BEHIND OTHER VEHICLES ALSO MAKING LEFT TURN WHEN A CAR CAME OUT OF A DRIVEWAY TO MY FAR RIGHT Mitt SIDE AND HIT ME. HE WAS Attempting TO CUT ACCROSS TO GO LEFT TO OPOSING TRAFFIC LANES. WHO IS AT FAULT HERE?
If you were stopped waiting to make your turn, the other driver might be at fault.
If your daughter was making a left forearm turn then it is likely that she is at fault.
Supposedly the car was being driven by a youthfull masculine, not of my ethnicity.
Since I don’t know where the accident occurred, I will reaction based on most provinces in Canada.
The man stated he had a family emergency and when I suggested him my phone number, his arms were jiggling and he could hardly write it down.
Two days ago the man to my left drifted into my lane and hit my car doing harm kicking off from the rear of my driver side door and proceeds back to over the rear wheel well.
If you pay for the harm out of your own pocket, there is no assure that the possessor of the vehicle will not attempt to make a claim anyway.
Talk with your insurance broker or agent and get their advice on this.
It is usually best to go through insurance. Most of the time the repairs are assured by the repair shop that the insurance company refers you to.
Do you have witnesses?
You should report the accident to your Mom’s insurance company.
He should go through is own insurance to have his vehicle immobilized.
You can go to any bod shop to get an estimate. recall that if you have a $500 collision deductible and the harm to your car is $1000 you will only receive $500 plus you will have an at fault accident on your record.
The total price of fixing is $1200 so i told the holder that i hit it. Do they shar the blame for being parked on the side of the street? And is it the etiquitte for me to pay for a rental car while their car is being motionless
You will likely be found to be 100% at fault since your vehicle was reversing. If you choose to lodge outside of insurance, the possessor of the other vehicle may insist that you pay for the rental car also.
I was making a left at a light and there was also a car infront of me making a left also so we were partially in the intersection when the light was turned from amber to crimson and the car infront proceeded as did I to clear the intersection but then all of a unexpected a car coming towards us on the opposite side of the road ran the crimson causing the car infront of me to hit the brakes abruptly and I ended up rear ending the car infront of me as the dude who ran the crimson took off. Who would be at fault? would it just be me as the car who rear ended the car or would it be collective with the car I rear ended? I am worried as the person I hit desired to lodge without insurance but assumes I will pay for my own damages and hers.
I am very startled as he is not under my insurance and neither of us have a motorcycle license.
car was parked in parking lot, another car bumped into side of car, harm was about 1,100 but was not reported only got drivers license info no police report was made now other driver wants to make a police report. what are your thoughts on how to treat.
Please Help to determine,
My wifey was driving my car during the mighty snow fall and weather was truly bad and roads were covered with black ice..
I have utter coverage on my car with one Accident Forgivness but my wifey is not listed on my policy.
This morning I was driving down the highway. There was an accident to my right, and I had seen the ambulance before and gotten into the left palm lane in prep. Someone in front to the right cut me off. The roads weren’t very icy, and I was only going about fifty, but when I braked too hard, my car embarked to spin out. I got out of my vehicle and witnessed that there was no harm on my side, and as far as I could tell from across the road, there was no harm on hers.
Just yesterday i was driving, and because i missed a parking spot along the side of the street, I determined to switch roles back to it so i could park. I look behind me, check all my mirrors and do not see any car behind me and begin to switch roles quickly, i check again, and dont see any car, then, BAM i run into the grill of a petite car driving behind me that was in my blindspot.
Myself and the other boy get out of our cars to butts the harm. Nothing on my rear bumper, but i cracked his plastic grill and slightly dented the bondage mask of his car.
Road conditions were bad and he slipped into her.
This morning I was in a right turning lane where the oncoming traffic light had just turned green, the lady in front of me seemed like she was going to make the turn before the traffic began to go through the intersection but she did not. When I got to work I looked at my front bumper and there is a petite crack but the bumper was bruised before anyways so I am not worried about it. My only concern now is whether or not I report this and who I would report it to if needed.
Any advice would be helpful, thank you
I was pulling out of my condo building’s parking lot. My car was on the sidewalk and I leisurely spinned it onto the road to see passed a large snowbank and a snowplow that was driving by.
I had a safe distance from the driver ahead of me, but the lady claimed I slowed down too prompt.
He wished insurance information claiming it was his friends car at very first then telling it was his parents car, however I preferred not to go through insurance and determined we would lodge it with some cash.
Two weeks later the person is claiming that she needs the grill, bumper and bondage mask immobilized.
I reaction her calls, messages she has my information.
I don’t indeed have that amount of cash free to pay it out but could sway the deductible.
I was in an accident which I think I wasn’t at fault about three years ago. No charges were laid but the other driver and myself were found 50% at fault according to the insurances. After getting my insurance renewal, my rates went up. When I searched for lower rates, I was told that I was now found totally at fault.
This was a clear case of the taxi driver making an illegal pass on a clearly marked street and driving rapid enough to cause considerable harm to my car.
I had the car stationary after taking the insurance money and adding extra money to get it motionless.
Why is it that just making the process go quick is what happened rather than do the right thing when the information clearly showcased how this accident happened ?
I don’t think she would reject. Next, if she reject.
You were so fortunate they did pull a quick on you.
What if my car was bruised by falling pinecones on private property where I was told and coerced to park against my wishes due to the fear of harm to my vehicle from the falling pine cones.
Is this right because it pisses me off that my car has no scrapes or nothing on it, but this person i assume hit i don’t know them i haven’t seen this car i only spoke to a man who takes reports. . . Can someone give me info on this or opinion
From phoenix az
A car was backing up at a Mcdonald’s drive thru..prompt enough I thought he was going to hit my car,so I reversed not realizing a pick up truck was behind me.
If you think the other dude is attempting to scam you, I say that’s too bad. Consider the alternative. Again do the math. Why should the other stud live with a scrape on his bumper … it wasn’t his fault. Do you want to use up your one freebie for such a petite amount of cash. Don’t get caught up in “He’s tearing you off” You messed up. it is a elementary as that. Again I say “Do the math”.
I am an insurance agent and reaction these questions daily. Yes you can still report this to your insurance company. Technically you are supposed to report an accident to your insurance as soon as you can. The reason you gave is understandable. The other party said they desired to pay. You waited and now it emerges they are not willing to pay for damages.
A person who is at fault is remorseful when face to face to with you, but once they leave and talk to their spouse friends or whoever and begin thinking about the consequences, they now commence thinking about how to wiggle off the hook.
Most accident screenplays are covered in “Fault Determination Rules” and in your case as much as it deep-throats, Fault is with you.
This response is basically the same no matter which province you are in. In Ontario we have what is called ” No Fault Insurance” what that mean is that your insurance company pays to fix your car or cover minor individual injuries no matter who’s fault the accident was. So the other person should call their insurance to have and damages repaired. The person who is not at fault will not have their premiums increase nor do they have to pay for any collision deductible when their car is motionless.
Except it was in a stop light the lady got all mad after she spotted that nothing happened to her car or mine.
Traffic was bad the car in front me slammed on her cracks by the time I spotted her break light it was to late for me to stop….I stepped on my brakes to avoid an accident but didn’t work my front bumper was bruised and scrapes on her car police came and I had to tow my truck because the bumper got stuck to my tire.
Article updated to include movie, and switch in Ontario’s reporting requirement.

Once the accident is reported, your insurance company will likely find out, so it is best to contact your broker/agent instantly to notify them.
I hope this helps.
for an accident that happened two weeks ago, minimal to no harm on either car we interchanged info but accepted t as a fortunate day and left, how long after can you report damages unnoticed?
You have a year from the date of loss to make a claim. That said, establishing how and when the harm was caused may be difficult, if not unlikely in some situations. As such, coverage may be denied by the adjuster if it they can not establish how and when harm occurred.
Hi if my bike was stolen and then recovered . But only have third party cover do I have to report it to the insurance?
You should indeed report all incidents to your insurance company.
The car in front of me had a green light, commenced to budge then slammed her cracks on. I had some time to stop but did TOUCH her bumper. We pulled over and She and I both looked and eyed NO harm.
The bf told me he dreamed $630 cash to fix it, and also said he got a quote from a bod shop in town. I called the figure shop to see if the bumper was in fact violated, as I found this story VERY hard to beleive and the proprietor told me it was NOT cracked but there were some superficial scrapes.
I am now doubtfull that my car or this Lil’ bump created these scrapes and if im just getting taken for a rail.
Now this car insurance ask for a large amount for insurance claim to me as I didn’t have car insurance at the moment.
There is no assure that if you pay for the repair, that the other driver will not go to their insurance company anyway.
Earlier this afternoon I was in the outer left lane turning onto the cross street by my house. I commenced my turn on yellow and before I was finished it was crimson. When I arrived, neither the “stalled” car, nor the fellow who followed me home were there. I circled the area twice, eyed no one and noticed no skid marks or harm to the curb. What should I do?
Since you didn’t actually collide with anyone and you seem jumpy about this situation, you could go to your local police station and notify them that someone impersonating a police officer followed you and let them know the situation.
I hit a man’s car with the back right side of m car on his back left side, scraping his gas tank door a little, I stopped my car and attempted not to pervert out (very first accident, seventeen year old driver) I showcased regret as best I could without being preoccupied with myself and transferred the man my license I agreed to pay any damages as soon as he knew how much it would cost for repairs..
BTW, looking at the scrape it could be fondled out with a cloth. I don’t know if this person needed a scapegoat when telling their dad that the BMW had a scrape on it. I don’t think this person will even pick up the report from the police station. I think they truly just needed a reason to tell their dad there was a scrape on his car.
This depends on what province you are in?
I hit a parked car in a parkinglot and we agreed to pay out of pocet, but I cant afford it. Should I report it to my insurance?
Had a minor accident.. was making a lane switch right and had my blinker on and was all clear as I leisurely switched over a car came speeding up and we collided causing a puny tend to the door and a violated mirror, they took only my very first name and number and I agreed to cover damages as she was a much older lady.. even tho’ she admitted she sped up to pass me. They got an estimate of one thousand two hundred which is unlikely, the car is worth very likely one thousand itself!
You will have to determine for yourself whether or not you want to pay for the harm but keep in mind that even tho’ you may pay for the harm, there is no assure that the other driver will not make a claim anyway.
I slipped in a pole last night in the rain and was able to drive home… looking at my truck in the morning it looks like more harm than what I had originally thought. Will my insurance cover this?
You should call your insurance professional (broker/agent) and find out what your coverage is for your specific policy. Depending on your history and your policy, you may have an endorsement called accident forgiveness which will cover your very first accident without enlargening your rate.
If it can be stationary for $500, but some assets shop counts it >$1000, should this accident be reported to the police?
Two. In a “typical” front-to-rear hit accident due to a stop brief, will police issue a ticket to the “rear” driver upon reporting to collision center? No speeding, just did not break as good as the front car…
Thanks for your help here!
We both checked each others car and spotted NO harm of any kind and
certainly no individual injuries.
What if he calls and asks to lodge privately, or I hear from only after
many months or later claiming other damages like private injury?
I was in the vehicle but it was not began and it was stationary. What should I do?
I infrequent hit someone in the 1st week of July two thousand thirteen in Toronto Canada. After testing both of our cars and since there was no harm to any car, we just collective our phone numbers and nothing else.
He promised utter compensation if lodged outside insurance, but after a day switched word and now suggesting lesser than 1/Two of the quote for my car.
When I eyed his switch sides lights come on, I placed my car in switch sides to back out of his way, but before I could budge, he didn’t check his mirrors, stepped on the gas and backed into me. I was not moving at the time of the collision. I had no time to stir. How does insurance determine fault? Is it still 50/50 because we are in a parking lot, or does it make a difference that I was not moving – my speed was zero at the time?
I was involved in car accident about a month ago.I was parked in a friends driveway when a man came out of another driveway and hit me ..he wished to pay out of pocket for the harm told me to get an estimate,,the estimate was 1,400 and he agreed. The car was motionless ,now nobody can get a hold of him.i do have his plate no#and name and phone no#.,nothing was reported.what are my options…..nancy
Typically, the driver in the moving vehicle is considered at fault, however, your claimjs adjuster will be the one determining fault so you can check with them to see what the details are of the investigation.
What you choose to do is a private choice.
The estimate is for about $400 but she is asking me for $1000 for private expenses due to the accident.
They exchanged numbers, and her insurance info, and now she won’t comeback our phone calls or texts.
If an oncoming vehicle in the wrong lane hits you ( he was approaching a designated lane for turning but determined to get a head commence before the lane was available) who is at fault or how would the insurance company process this collision.
I absolutely can’t afford my insurance going up but I would like the harm that wasn’t my fault motionless?
Hello My daughters car was hit by an uninsured driver .While parked on private property . she was not in the car and has insurance . now the other driver is unresponsive to our phone calls. His car had the most harm but her car had some harm what the best way to treat this.
I would suggest speaking to your local police department as well as your broker/agent and claims adjuster as to what the best way to go about this is. Without having all the details, they will be best equip to help you.
My vehicle was parked legally in the parking lot where I Iive. Then a chick moving into my building hit it with a truck causing harm to it.
I was in my apartment at the time this occurred.
My neighbor witnessed the entire thing happen while sitting in his truck in his driveway. He honked his horn at them & told them they had better report it to the building
That’s when the driver (the female moving in) went to the front office & asked the landlord whose vehicle it was that she had hit.
She then came to my door & told me that her friend had hit my vehicle with her truck. (Lie right there as she was driving)
I went outside & surveyed the harm & they said that they desired to pay out of pocket.
Completes up we have the same insurance company. I told my broker & they gave me an adjuster to phone. I called him & he said that because it was the other parties fault, I was given a different adjuster.
I eventually got a hold of the other adjuster & gave
her all the decent paperwork, police report etc. But then she emailed me back
& said that there was nothing she could do until she talked to the driver.
This was a month ago & obviously the damsel that hit me is attempting to
hide hoping this will fade away. I haven’t seen her around the building but she
still lives here as I asked the manager.
This dame is a LIAR & manipulator & is attempting to get out of this.. This would have been a hit & run if my neighbor hadn’t seen them do it.
So what’s my next step? HELP?
If I was in my spouse’s truck and backed into our neighbour’s vehicle, whose insurance is affected?
About a month ago I was rear ended by a benz it was a youthful damsel the accident was pretty bad on her end as her benz was pretty smashed mine jus had a little bump. After the police officer wrote the accident report I spoke to her and she agreed to just pay me in cash.
I went ahead got my car immobilized cost me one thousand five hundred after I called her to pay me back she turns down to pick up my call or even pay?
What can I do, can I still file a claim thru insurance since I got it immobilized already
Any help will be very appreciated
You should be fine to file a claim. Talk to your insurance professional (broker/agent). Typically you have up to two years to file a claim.
because people are after money. I am going through the same thing right now
You can always visit your local collision reporting centre at any time to report an accident after the fact, or you could wait for her to contact you… I’m sorry, I cannot advise you what to do here as this is your private choice to make.
Another boy opened the door to our suv he was driving and threw a dead duck into his lap my son freaked out and liquidated his foot from brake an hit a lady backing out of parking space. . no police report was filed the school police officer was already gone but notified said no report needed to be made bc it was private property . . neither party involved wishes to file on our insurance due to rate increasage. . the other lady wants us to pay the 1,700 harm to her suv . . i have Three,800 harm to my suv which is to substitute bumper and grill .
Hi my daughter hit a car ion a mall parking lot , and waited for the driver , she gave her hone number and 2weeks later the holder call and said the harm was over a $1000.00 and for her to pay up ,now her step dad has been a mechanic for over thirty yrs and dreamed more than one estimate and also desired him to fact the receipts over , the proprietor did neither and we attempted to call a few times to resolve it and never returned our calls , now two months later he goes to the police , where does my daughter stand with the payment ?
The man told me he’ll pay off.
My BMW is most likely over one thousand of damages and now I have back aches..
If your daughter was making a left arm turn then it is likely that she is at fault.
Supposedly the car was being driven by a youthfull masculine, not of my ethnicity.
Since I don’t know where the accident occurred, I will reaction based on most provinces in Canada.
Your wifey’s insurance rate should not increase as a result of her being rear ended.
Most of the time, the driver who is reversing is considered to be 100% at fault.
It is possible that even tho’ you pay to repair her harm, that she still contact the police.
The man stated he had a family emergency and when I suggested him my phone number, his mitts were jiggling and he could scarcely write it down.
I am sorry but I can’t response that for you.
Two days ago the fellow to my left drifted into my lane and hit my car doing harm kicking off from the rear of my driver side door and proceeds back to over the rear wheel well.
If you pay for the harm out of your own pocket, there is no ensure that the possessor of the vehicle will not attempt to make a claim anyway.
Talk with your insurance broker or agent and get their advice on this.
It is usually best to go through insurance. Most of the time the repairs are assured by the repair shop that the insurance company refers you to.
Do you have witnesses?
You should report the accident to your Mom’s insurance company.
He should go through is own insurance to have his vehicle immobile.
You can go to any bod shop to get an estimate. reminisce that if you have a $500 collision deductible and the harm to your car is $1000 you will only receive $500 plus you will have an at fault accident on your record.
And is it the etiquitte for me to pay for a rental car while their car is being motionless
You will likely be found to be 100% at fault since your vehicle was reversing. If you choose to lodge outside of insurance, the proprietor of the other vehicle may insist that you pay for the rental car also.
I was making a left at a light and there was also a car infront of me making a left also so we were partially in the intersection when the light was turned from amber to crimson and the car infront proceeded as did I to clear the intersection but then all of a unexpected a car coming towards us on the opposite side of the road ran the crimson causing the car infront of me to hit the brakes abruptly and I ended up rear ending the car infront of me as the boy who ran the crimson took off. Who would be at fault? would it just be me as the car who rear ended the car or would it be collective with the car I rear ended? I am worried as the person I hit dreamed to lodge without insurance but assumes I will pay for my own damages and hers. Please advise?
Most of the time regardless of the reason, the driver who rear-ends the vehicle in front is considered to be at fault.
You can pay for his harm outside of insurance but you should know that he can still make a claim and your insurance company could still find out. It’s a bit of a risk.
MY CAR WAS PARKED AT THE DEALER SHIP TO GET Immobilized & SOMEONE (THEY Reject TO TELL ME WHO) HIT MY CAR.
Anyway, he bruised my drivers side fender with his bod, bumper and headlight with his head and fetish mask with his antler. This may be expensive, however im wondering if claiming this through insurance will increase my rates? Ive already spoken to police and i know i dont have to report anything so im not cracking any laws here. ive been given the option to meet the police officer tomorrow and file the report if i want to claim it.
My beau hit his brakes quickly but the front tire of the bike still tapped under the person’s bumper. They both pulled over and assessed that there was no harm to the car or the bike, so the other driver told him there was no need to call the police. He asked for my beau’s phone number and took a picture of the license plate. My beau left after this. The person then called him 30-45 minutes later telling him he had called the police and was attempting to file a report but the police did not believe him because there was no harm to his bumper and requested my beau go back to the scene of the accident to explain to police that he did in fact hit his car and file a formal report. My bf did not go back, as per our understanding you don’t have to file a report if there is no harm. I have not called my insurance yet. What should I do? I am very startled as he is not under my insurance and neither of us have a motorcycle license.
car was parked in parking lot, another car bumped into side of car, harm was about 1,100 but was not reported only got drivers license info no police report was made now other driver wants to make a police report. what are your thoughts on how to treat.
Please Help to determine,
My wifey was driving my car during the mighty snow fall and weather was truly bad and roads were covered with black ice..
I have utter coverage on my car with one Accident Forgivness but my wifey is not listed on my policy.
This morning I was driving down the highway. There was an accident to my right, and I had seen the ambulance before and gotten into the left palm lane in prep. Someone in front to the right cut me off. She did not roll down her window to attempt to talk with me, and I thought at the time that she had her left blinker on, however with hindsight it might have been her hazard lights.
However, i noticed that the officer also transferred the other driver a ticket. Do i have a right to know what ticket the other driver received? its not on the accident report.
Just yesterday i was driving, and because i missed a parking spot along the side of the street, I determined to switch sides back to it so i could park. I look behind me, check all my mirrors and do not see any car behind me and begin to switch sides quickly, i check again, and dont see any car, then, BAM i run into the grill of a puny car driving behind me that was in my blindspot.
Myself and the other fellow get out of our cars to cabooses the harm. Nothing on my rear bumper, but i cracked his plastic grill and slightly dented the rubber hood of his car.
He seemed reluctant to go through insurance, so we exchanged cell numbers and very first names and he said he was going to call me back in a few days.
This morning I was in a right turning lane where the oncoming traffic light had just turned green, the lady in front of me seemed like she was going to make the turn before the traffic commenced to go through the intersection but she did not. As I was looking at the oncoming traffic at this time I did not notice she had not made the turn and as I was creeping up I tapped her bumper. We both put our cars in park and put our hazards on. She got out of her car and looked at her bumper and also looked at my front end and said there is no harm and flapped me off.
I had a safe distance from the driver ahead of me, but the lady claimed I slowed down too quick.
I hit a car in a parking lot and scraped the rear bumper of that car, no dents. the boy got two quotes of around. $1300 each, which I think is high. My car has minimal harm so I am not going to fix it. Should I go through insurance? He indeed does not want me to go through insurance, will it affect his? How badly will my rates go up? I don’t indeed have that amount of cash free to pay it out but could sway the deductible.
I was in an accident which I think I wasn’t at fault about three years ago. No charges were laid but the other driver and myself were found 50% at fault according to the insurances. After getting my insurance renewal, my rates went up. When I searched for lower rates, I was told that I was now found downright at fault.
This was a clear case of the taxi driver making an illegal pass on a clearly marked street and driving swift enough to cause considerable harm to my car.
No matter what I said to the adjuster he insisted that it was a 50/50 script. The pictures of the harm clearly showcase that it was not and the road was a no passing zone that he hit me in.
I am disturbed by the adjuster’s attitude which struck me as it was not worth fighting for as my cars book value was below write off value. I had the car stationary after taking the insurance money and adding extra money to get it immobile.
Why is it that just making the process go quick is what happened rather than do the right thing when the information clearly demonstrated how this accident happened ?
Very first, when she was blocking you in, you should have told her to budge, amicably. I don’t think she would deny. Next, if she reject. Why? You could give her five minutes. If she still deny, call the police and run right into her car.
You were so fortunate they did pull a swift on you.
Is this right because it pisses me off that my car has no scrapes or nothing on it, but this person i assume hit i don’t know them i haven’t seen this car i only spoke to a stud who takes reports. . . Can someone give me info on this or opinion

A car was backing up at a Mcdonald’s drive thru..rapid enough I thought he was going to hit my car,so I reversed not realizing a pick up truck was behind me.
Do you want to use up your one freebie for such a petite amount of cash. Don’t get caught up in “He’s tearing you off” You messed up. it is a ordinary as that. Again I say “Do the math”.
I am an insurance agent and reaction these questions daily. Yes you can still report this to your insurance company. Technically you are supposed to report an accident to your insurance as soon as you can. The reason you gave is understandable. The other party said they dreamed to pay. You waited and now it emerges they are not willing to pay for damages.
Have them write a note at the time or record them admitting it on your clever phone. If they turn down, then call the police. Attempt to get the names and phone numbers of someone who witnessed the incident. A person who is at fault is remorseful when face to face to with you, but once they leave and talk to their spouse friends or whoever and commence thinking about the consequences, they now begin thinking about how to wiggle off the hook.
Most accident screenplays are covered in “Fault Determination Rules” and in your case as much as it deepthroats, Fault is with you.
In Ontario we have what is called ” No Fault Insurance” what that mean is that your insurance company pays to fix your car or cover minor private injuries no matter who’s fault the accident was. So the other person should call their insurance to have and damages repaired. The person who is not at fault will not have their premiums increase nor do they have to pay for any collision deductible when their car is motionless.
Except it was in a stop light the lady got all mad after she eyed that nothing happened to her car or mine.
I was using the rental total coverage insurance as I didn’t have any insurance.
