Car stolen from Dells triggers pursue that finishes in crash on Highway fifty one in Madison
Three youthful Milwaukee residents were arrested Tuesday afternoon after stealing two cars in Wisconsin Dells, ramming a squad car to avoid arrest, and a pursue on Interstate 39-90-94 that ended in a crash on the north edge of Madison, authorities said.
Taken into custody on a host of charges after the crash on Highway fifty one at Hoepker Road were Lamont M. Cannady, 17; Justice R. Roby, 21; and a 16-year-old doll who was not identified by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Sheriff’s Office:
Wisconsin Dells police notified the Sheriff’s Office around three p.m. Tuesday that a Hyundai was stolen in the city, and the thieves were suspected in a string of other thefts in the Dells-Lake Delton area.
Using on-board tracking, the vehicle was located on the Interstate headed south and was deactivated. As the Hyundai came to a stop near the Highway sixty exit east of Lodi, Roby, who was driving, and a passenger, the unnamed doll, leaped out of the still-moving vehicle as a deputy and state troopers closed in.
As those squad cars came to a stop to begin pursuing the suspects on foot, a 2nd vehicle, a Kia Forte sedan driven by Cannady, struck the Sheriff’s Office squad car in the driver’s door to pin it closed and to prevent the deputy from pursuing Roby and the doll. Roby leaped into the Kia, which took off down the Interstate, while the damsel fled on foot. Officers split up, pursuing both the car and the damsel on foot.
The Kia proceeded into Dane County, exiting the Interstate at Highway 51, running a crimson light at Hoepker Road and hit a passenger vehicle in the intersection. Cannady and Roby were arrested and taken to UW Hospital with minor injuries before being released to jail. The driver of the car hit by the Kia was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
The damsel who was left behind called a third car to pick her up, but officers were in contact with its occupants and the chick was later found and arrested by a K-9 unit in a cornfield.
The Sheriff’s Office said Cannady faces tentative charges of operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent, felony eluding police, possession of stolen property, felony hit and run to a law enforcement vehicle, recklessly endangering safety, and resisting and obstructing police. Roby’s tentative charges are operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent, knowingly eluding as a passenger, and resisting and obstructing. The 16-year-old was arrested on tentative charges of knowingly being a passenger in a stolen vehicle and resisting and obstructing.
Extra charges are expected, the Sheriff’s Office said.
