Evo Summer Tyre Test 2015

The results of Evo’s annual summer tyre test were released this week and it made for some rather interesting (yes, I wrote interesting) reading.

As part of the test they took models from a mix of ten tyre manufacturers, with each tyre being tested in the tyre size 225/40 R18.

How The Results Were Calculated

In their write up, the magazine explained that, “in contrast to some other magazine tyre tests, subjective spectacle is a significant factor in our results, accounting for some forty per cent of the final score.”

On top of this, readers were also told that their results are weighted towards tests determine the road spectacle of the tyre – criteria such as such as lap times and braking distances.

What Car Was Used?

Tyre testing requests consistency to find out how the tyres are performing. As such, the testers knew that a “stable, predictable chassis, approachable boundaries and crisp, communicative steering” were required.

They found their reaction to this in the VW Golf GTI.

Tester comments: “The Vredestein collective very first place with the Yokohama for its dry lap time. It performed well via the dry tests, but a mediocre showcasing in the moist denied it a stronger overall result.”

Tester comments: “The Goodyear is a very strong all-rounder – it finished third overall in the objective dry tests and matched that in the humid.”

Tester comments: “Having narrowly bettered the Goodyear in the final reckoning, the Pirelli scores the very first of the podium places. It’s one victory came in the moist braking test, albeit it also performed well in the dry.”

Tester comments: “The margin inbetween the top two tyres in the final reckonings couldn’t have been narrower… [the Yokohama tyre] didn’t back up its exemplary dry-weather spectacle with truly competitive wet-weather ability”

Tester comments: “The Continental managed to pull off a remarkable trick by performing superbly in both the raw and the dry tests. Tyres are typically best suited to one or the other, but the Continental proved its unparalleled breadth of capability.”
