Substituting the Indigo, the Tata Zest comes as another alternative for the buyers in the entry level saloon segment in India. It is part of Tata`s strategy to make a comeback in the Indian automotive arena with an aim of targeting customers in the lower price spectrum.
Just like any other hatchback-based-saloon car, the Tata Zest too carry forwards the basic outer form of the Bolt apart from the evident extended back-end. The outer design elements too remains the same with a few switches made in order to separate the saloon from the hatchback like the front grille, which is lined at the bottom by an extra lean chrome stripe. The housing for the fog lamps, however remaining similar in form, is slightly moulded at the edges and gets day time running LED lamps. The Tata Zest looks well proportion when viewed from the sides as the opened up rear-end just not feel like a last minute addition. Moving towards the back, the Zest features an elegant and wise look which is enhanced by the chrome undress above the licence plate. The wrap-around taillights are plain and compact but are not able to stand out in term of its design. The bumper gets a Bolt like black plastic fixture in the middle which is highlighted by a thick outline.
The cabin layout in the Tata Zest is almost identical to the one that we find on the Bolt. The only major difference is the beige treatment given to the dashboard and door panels to make the otherwise black interiors feel premium. Another thing which the cabin lacks on is the amount of storage spaces and cubby slots as they are available in a very minimalistic number. On the top spec variants the central console gets an automatic climate control unit which is substituted by a standard one on the lower priced options. Both the front and rear seats suggest decent amount of convenience and legroom to the passengers. Luggage space is not what you would expect from a saloon car as it is obstructed by the wheel arches and in addition to this, the loading point is mounted fairly high which might turn out to be a little inconvenient.
The Tata Zest comes with an engine line-up which consists of one petrol and two diesel engines. The petrol powered car gets a 1.Two litre turbocharged ‘Revotron` engine which churns out 90bhp and 140Nm of torque. The diesel powered vehicle gets a 1.Trio litre engine which available in two sets of tune. One is the 75bhp and 190Nm one while the other is tuned to produce 90bhp and 200Nm of torque. The petrol as well as the 75bhp diesel mil gets a 5-speed manual gearbox while the 90bhp diesel is available with a 5-speed automatic transmission as well.
