M1 crash van driver released from hospital

The driver of a van involved in a collision on the M1 which killed two peoplehas been released from hospital.

The 27-year old passenger of the white Ford Transit van and the 87-year old driver of the blue Mazda Premacy were both pronounced dead at the scene after the van hit the car travelling in the wrong direction.

Leicestershire Police confirmed the man was released after recovering in Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The driver of a car who died in a collision on the M1 on Monday has been named.

87-year-old Albert Kenneth Newman from Nottingham died when the blue Mazda Premacy he was travelling in was involved in a collision near Junction twenty four of the southbound carriageway.

The incident happened at around 2am on Monday and also involved a white Ford Transit van.

27-year-old Michael Joesph William Luciw, who was a passenger in the van, also died in the collision.

The driver of the van was taken to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham where he remains in a stable condition.

M1 car crash victim was 'upbeat, likeable character'

Staff at the school attended by one of the victims of Monday’s fatal crash on the M1 have paid tribute to him.

27-year-old Michael Luciw attended the Trinity Catholic school in Nottingham from September 2000.

“He was a upbeat, likeable character with a very personable nature and many friends. He got on well with his teachers. He was always a family orientated youthfull man who was keen to support his Mum and Dad and took a keen interest in his junior siblings who also came to Trinity. He was always loyal, had a good constant work ethic and he left here to go into employment.”

“A number of staff here still recall him and a number of ex staff have also contacted the school today, because they recall the family fondly and desired to express their sadness. We are all shocked and upset to hear this very sad news and would pass on our condolences to the family.”

27-year old Michael Luciw died following the crash on the M1 in Leicestershire in the early hours of Monday morning.

“It is with deepest sadness that Michael Luciw loving father, son, brother, uncle, grandson and nephew was sadly killed in the early hours of Monday morning on the M1 in a fatal car crash in which another person also died.” “We as a family would appreciate at this time to be left alone to come to terms with his loss. He was a big part of all our lives and will be deeply missed. Thank you.”

The M1 southbound carriageway is set be closed until this evening around 7-8pm following a fatal road traffic collision this morning, police have confirmed.

The collision happened at about 2am near to junction twenty four of the southbound carriageway and involved two vehicles – a blue Mazda Premacy and a white Ford transit van.

Prior to the collision police had received reports of a car travelling the wrong way up the southbound carriageway of the M1.

The 87-year-old driver of the Mazda and a 27-year-old, who was a passenger in the van, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van was taken to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham where he remains in a stable condition.

The southbound carriageway is being worked on after the road surface sustained considerable harm during the incident. As a result, the carriageway inbetween Junction twenty four and twenty five is closed while work proceeds.

The one lane closure on the northbound carriageway has been lifted and this carriageway has now fully reopened.

M1 likely to remain shut 'for another 3-4 hours'

The M1 southbound is likely to be remain shut inbetween J25 and J24 for another three to four hours, ITV News Central has been told.
